Yeah, the Botw shrine formula is getting a bit old. This is something a new 3D Mario could look to improve on, actually incorporating the challenge areas into the world.
They did try it in MKW so there's some hope but a platformer would need something more substantial.

Bananaza is good but is barely a fucking platformer dude. Most of the gameplay is in the layers and the layers are NOT platforming. They are terrain destruction. Platforming is left for the challenge ruins which are a mixed bag. Some of them are decent, others are just more smashing.

A new 3D Mario game would be a far superior PLATFORMER because Mario would actually spend most of his time running and jumping instead of running and punching.
