With that said he isn't a bad squad mate at all. He's pretty fine. I'd say companions get split into bad, fine, great.
He's in the fine tier. The only companions outright in the bad tier is Ashley, genuinely horrible. Even Jacob is fine, he's really not bad on replays.

This is fucking retarded. ME3 was marketed like Gears of War 3 or Call of Duty 3, as if you can just come on without playing the last two and knowing what was going on when it just wasn't that sort of game. Mass Effect was the worst game series to ever try to pick up new players. It was built from the ground up to appeal almost exclusively to people that followed the story from the start.

James was okay though I guess. He was a new character, so there was no story of his to rape.

Only he's not. He was introduced in a movie where he has his own version of ME2, Collectors and Cerberus included. His retelling of it in 3 is just vague enough to make it sound like he's a generic human soldier who had a generic run in with events Shepard was involved in.

He was ironically one of the most grounded characters and better friends Shepard can have in the game. For all the Wrex memes, Wrex is mostly an asshole and has no actual friendship or ties with barely anyone. Only Garrus has a somewhat genuine characterization of a friendship with Shepard.

Yeah but nobody saw it and the actual character designers said he was designed from the ground up to be an audience surrogate for people who jumped in at Mass Effect 3 with 0 knowledge of the last two games.

It literally can't be debunked because Bioware said it. I agree they did a shit job at it and mostly made him his own character, which I honestly much prefer desu, but he was not written with that in mind.

I don't have a source but feel free to look it up. In the release materials, Bioware said he was an audience surrogate. "Proving this wrong" requires proving they never actually said that, not pointing to any character traits of Vega's. What Vega actually does in game doesn't prove or disprove this either way.

Saying otherwise is like saying Indoctrination Theory is correct. No, the game just didn't do a good job of conveying what was actually happening. It has fuck all to do with in universe shit, Bioware just fucked up or abandoned a half implemented idea and some remnants of it remain sprinkled in.
