Why have games that let you play as the villain gone so out of style?

there are still some RPGs (where it should be a standard option) but apart from that?

min maxxers plus the millenial-zoomer indecisiveness complex

You are not allowed to give players "wrong decisions" anymore.
Experimentation became pure passive entertainment. It's the same reason why games like cookie clicker get big.
Numbers only go up, no wrong answers.

Besides Total War and Dawn of War which don't really count which WH games let you play as the bad guys?

Most people prefer playing as the hero. Making villainshit is just extra work for no audience.
Previously, in games where you could choose, the villain route always sucked dick.
And the games where you had no choice but to play as the villain e.g. Overlord were just dogshit to begin with. And you still ended up just saving the world anyway, ha ha what a twist amirite.

The only good ones were the RTS games like Warcraft 3 or Red Alert 2.

I'm going to say Rogue Trader possibly and why don't those two count?

Overlord 2 is unironically a great game. Far from flawless, but it's perfectly fine as a fun romp. It also has the "whoops gotta save the world even though you're evil" trope, but in that one at least you're just saving the world so you can rule it, plow your harem of hot corrupted babes and because the antagonists are fucking bumbling retards playing with shit they don't understand, none of that pussy shit.

I wouldn't count Rogue Trader either since you're playing a hero of the Imperium and the heretic path sucks anyway. If Owlcat made a Black Crusade game then sure that'd count.

BfME and its sequel
The expansion is pretty funny
>spend the entire campaign building up Witch King's kingdom
>he gets BTFO in the prologue intro narration
>the prologue mission is you playing as elves and humans, killing all his captains, and reducing him to nothing

Based take honestly. Modern game dev is all about keeping that dopamine highway switch permanently flipped. They don't want players to question their actions or feel bad because that lowers engagement stats. Letting you be a villain means moral ambiguity, potential consequences, or-god forbid-an ending that's not just fireworks and checklist completion. Can't have that.

Plus, most people don't want to feel like the bad guy unless it's behind 10 layers of irony and meme armor. Choices have to be sanitized now, everything has to "respect the player's time" which actually means "don't interrupt the Skinner box."

The Rise of the Witch-king campaign is peak comedy. You spend all that time sending Carn Dรปm's finest to wreck Arnor, get epic betrayals going, crush elves, then BAM-epilogue says โ€œlol he died anywayโ€ before Frodo was even born. Itโ€™s like the devs finished the campaign and remembered the movies existed. Still, marching trolls through Fornost with that soundtrack going hard makes it all worth it.
