To be fair pulling teeth would be better than the first zone and how fucking boring it was. you can tell by the hideous jaggies especially on sam's cargo, the cranes, power lines that looked like dashed lines, etc. that the render scale is lowered. check your gpu control panel to make sure dlss or fsr is completely off.

Yeah, the game fumbles quite a bit in the first zone. Pacing is pretty awful all throughout. I get people being turned off by that. Gear progression is so slow too. It really picks up after Higgs slaps you with "Aren't you tired of the grind?" It's like they knew. Maybe the second zone is a bit too sharp of a difficulty spike but I was so happy the game finally started challenging me so I didn't hate any of it at all. I'm on my 3rd playthrough, one at release and I rushed through the directors cut once before when that came out but now I'm taking my time. All the additions are pretty great. Even the crossovers with CP77 and HL are fun. The Alyx gloves are especially neat.

I use my PC for work and it's great to be able to max out older games and throw super resolution at it, in the sense of running it a much higher resolution and then outputting it to your monitors resolution. Crispy clear graphics and smooth frames.
