Only visually. Each painting felt distinctly different in terms of level design and some areas like Dark Academy had little flourishes like the flesh skeleton biology room that made them enjoyable. I'd rather have thematically similar areas than the butt ugly areas of OoE.

During exploration you need to pay attention to damage types. Some shit just takes chip damage from everything but like strike element attacks. It's just how it the game is.

Against bosses you have to learn their attacks and the windows where you can beat on them. It's not optional like in most of these games where you can mostly ignore their boss patterns and just DPS them down because they just hit too hard. But there's very little reflex involved in most of them and if you work out the right formula you can get the no-hit medal on them without much need for reflexes or other twitch skills.

Enemies being weak/resistant to certain weapon types was pretty retarded, you are constantly switching weapon and it's such a drag. Reminds me of awfully designed JRPGs like Vagrant Story

The bosses are nothing special if you've played other 2D action games like Mega Man, very cookie cutter patterns, and yeah you can also DPS them down late game by using the Nitesco + any weapon glyph union with the death ring equipped

Rondo is the best Castlevania. And then I always flipflop on how I feel about SotN and CotM. CotM has the best general feel in the series and the best difficulty of the Metroidvanias. But it's also utterly soulless, artistically barebones, and tonally feels like a bootleg Castlevania. While SotN is peak sovl and I love how experimental its willing to let items be compared to later games, but its also frankly so easy it can be boring.

SotN has Shield Rod and other funny gimmicks. The later games don't and are handheld games. Every game after SotN just tries to copy it. And graphically they feel like downgrades. It'd be like if the series started with 4 and then decided to downgrade to 1.

Every time I play HoD and wonder why the colour palette is so garish and why Juste has the obnoxious Street Fighter Alpha afterimage effect turned permanently on, I just remember that CotM got murdered on the internet for being too dark because Nintendo cheaped out on the GBA and didn't put in a backlight.

Fuck Nintendo. Who else had one of these?

>Bimmy is a retard for getting stuck on the mandragora "puzzle"
Honestly I just don't get it. How did he play through the entire game and not think to press the "use item" button? Even if the has right that you couldn't drop the nitro, there was no need for him to restart back at the beginning of the game. Whenever you die there is an option to reset back at the beginning of the level.
At first I thought he was intentionally making it up for the bit. But he was playing on easy, if he beat the level the game wouldve kicked him out and told him to restart back on normal. And that would've made for a far better bit. So he clearly was genuine in his opinion. It's just baffling. I just don't get it

I forced myself to beat this game for the first time ever very recently and it definitely gets less tedious as it goes on. I'd even say it becomes really good once you get past the shitty aimless mini maps but holy fuck that is a hell of a barrier to get through. The story is cringe to the max though in a different more faggy sort of way than dawn of sorrow which I think ie equally cringe but in a generic anime sense.

You're using only weapon glyphs instead of the comically broken spell ones (axes are an exception - they carry you until you get the triple fireball)
You're not selling all those excess quest items for mad cash
You're trying to no-hit the bosses - the only thing difficult in the game and mostly due to absolutely godawful hitboxes where in one moment you can have your entire sprite inside parts of the enemy with no problems and in the nex you get ripped to shreds because a tiny stray pixel touched you which is especially a problem with multi-segmented bosses

Eligor cheats is the thing. Every boss in the game has tells before their attacks, usually with an auditory cue and an animation. It's part of the patterns so you know what to dodge.
Once you get on his back, his tells are inconsistent because regardless of the lead up to the attack, the actual attack that comes out can change to one of the ones designed to knock you off if he has crossed an invisible HP threshold. He does this twice in the fight, at 2/3rds and 1/3rd HP.

This is true too! In this case though, I think it's just an animation oversight. They use a paper-doll style of animating Eligor, and when he gets hit into the damage animation, the hurtbox of the sword just kinda has to lerp into position across the arena, player be damned. It's a bit more forgivable because it doesn't look intentional.
>>716114781
You basically have to be against the wall most of the time, and then time your jumps / crouching in accordance to his attacks. The patterns are quick but quite reliable, once you get them down. The nice thing about the fight is that his biggest weakness is sitting right outside his door, and you can pretty ambiently spam Nitesco through-out the fight. It shouldn't take more than 2 minutes with a decent setup.

I wouldn't even mind it if there was something to do in those corridors but some of them are devoid of ANYTHING and are nothing but filler where you spend 1-2 minutes to slowly walk from one door to the other with not even any enemies inbetween.
I don't think I've even seen a single environmental hazard or trap so far.
How the fuck can't you even be arsed to add generic shit like spikes or flamevents to your areas?
The longer I play the more it feels as if they quickly ran out of what little budget they had and just released a pre-alpha at best where they only finished the general layout of the areas.
