You mileage will vary. I found SH/RE and trash like Cry of Fear not scary at all since there's zero consequences and your character is basically invincible in those games and they're more like bad action games/FPS.

This is a really cool top-down survival horror with first person rail shooter like combat. I loved it.

it's scariest during the nights and it turns from you cowering into you inviting the horrors into your death trap to cave their skull in with a shovel

Most horror games get less scary as they go on as the game elements take over the experience and you kill the 100th zombie mook or whatever and dying means literally nothing. Darkwood is like the opposite because you basically get weaker as the game goes, there are permanent consequences to death, etc. The nights are just random events too, and some are pretty hard to survive. The only thing I can think that was similar was SH4, where your apartment is slowly taken over by hauntings and the game erodes your sense of safety

pathologic 2 kind of does this with every death giving a permanent debuff, and every day lopping on more bullshit to deal with as well as making your survival meters tick down faster. possibly the most difficult walking simulator ever made

So you didn't play it? They can get in by the second biome. By the third biome the chompers will get through all your barricades in a minute or so and in the 4th biome, the centipedes and shit can just teleport right beside you.

Why is Darkwood so creepy? I love horror games, movies, comics etc but I loaded up Darkwood and played the first night and I was on edge the whole time. I still haven't completed it. But I just felt really fucking disturbed. Not scared. Just creeped out I should finish it

Only game I've ever felt fear from was Turok 2, with the children crying for Turok in the first level.
Only other horror games I've played are Faith: The Unholy Trinity, and Omori.
Both of which I absolutely recommend, but I think only Faith is what you're looking for.

if you're an autistic contrarian, think games are art, and always pick the hardest setting available in every game then go for it. if you're anyone else you'll be wasting your time with it desu

The Whistleblower DLC was great too, it's one of the few DLCs I enjoy more than the base game. How is The Bunker? I played Amnesia 2, the one in the desert after a plane crash and did not like it at all

Fear of the unknown
You always got monsters walking by your hideout, but you are not sure which ones or if they're spotted you.

It helps how the game requires your full attention and how a lot of time it requires you making decision at the spot, like if you should waste your ammo or use melee weapon.
