Even recalling from the last time I played it 5 or 6 years ago, there's so much that they got right with it that upon applying modern "improvements" for the sequel, it only took away from the game.
You have your whole moveset from the beginning so you don't suddenly learn about some new capability.
Staying in first person it gives a different sense of momentum than you could achieve in third person without forcing some exaggerated camera shake. I doubt it would have worked as well turning the camera when dangling from a pipe and aiming the way you wanted to jump.
Progression through the levels feels somewhat natural, often with a direction in mind or a landmark instead of a specific route.
The graphics are incredibly clear, often looked at as one of the best cases for baked lighting and use of colour.

The only downside is forced combat which was likely a last minute addition.
Disarming and running on I didn't mind too much but the hand to hand with the runner was awful.
