you can cancel your level up to save up for a better stat, it's risky because you lose all unspent experience once you get a game over but getting an early point of attack can help a lot.

As should be the case with any NES game you pick up, look up the manual online, read it carefully end to end, and keep it bookmarked for reference, because often information is conveyed in there that isn't conveyed so well in the game itself. In a rare instance of unprompted consumer-friendliness, Nintendo themselves actually post a lot of their old manuals on their website.
This game in particular has a couple (at least one for sure, arguably 2-4) instances of really bullshit "puzzles" or otherwise overly abstruse progress-gates, so don't feel to bad about looking up what to do if you get stuck and bored of not making progress.

Otherwise as you level up it gets insanely easy, I'd use a map for the last temple unless you wanna be exposed to SOME bullshit.

I really don't think this is true. I played through it for the first time not counting getting stuck at the beginning of the game as a kid a few years back and had no problems figuring out where to go without using any guides.
Here's what I'd consider a real criticism though: The final boss sucks. It's very hard with no clear indication of what you're supposed to do other than know to cheese with crouch stabs.

Actual tips? If you're unsure how a bit (blue slime) or Myu (lil spike guy) are moving on a platform and you're sure you'll be knocked in lava, wait for them to yeet themselves into water/lava. It'll only a take a few seconds. otherwise you can jump crouchstab to the platform.

Jumpslash ironknuckles and lizalfos, even in tight ceilings.

refer to a guide if you're stuck. I grew up with this game but even i realize that theres some stupidly hidden shit in this game. Items are hidden on random overworld tiles so try not to miss stuff.

you can spam the downstab to kill high HP enemies quicker when you get it.

If you cant figure something out, magic and jump spells are sometimes you best friend.

Genuinely look up a guide for Death Mountain, it's not worth the headache and also you're going to need to spoil yourself when to use the "Spell" spell to access a temple , when this game first came out it was kind of expected you had a guide for it and there's 0 hints as to the location of the temple where you need to use that Spell at.

Also get ready for the most underrated Zelda game that is genuinely in my top 10 games ever made. It's on par with the first two Castlevania games imo

Hell no. You're crazy if you think II's boring ass combat is anything on par on stuff like Megaman or Castlevania. The idea is cool of high and low blocks, but doesn't carry itself throughout the game. You don't even get cool items to play around with, you get a bunch of spells that just hits with a generic full screen attack or Fire which lets you shoot at range, and that's it. Everyone skips the Great Palace with the Fairy (or Cucco spell in the fan remake) spell because by then you're so bored you want it to be over with. Switching from a top down overworld to a jrpg-style map was clearly a experiment that didn't pan out well which is why Nintendo never used it again. Getting into constant encounters everytime you leave the road is not fun, even with the bait in the fan remake.

Yeah there's a house in the hidden town where you get the spell that gives you the Magic Key which is an infinite key. The only way to know about how to find the house was in the official manual the game itself gives 0 hints about it except there's "something" on the outskirts of town from the magic container lady

It's optional unlike the hidden palace but it is cool

I think it's a fair statement to make. It's a good game. Megaman and Castlevania are far more action oriented while Zelda 2 is an adventure game. They're very different experiences. I think I might prefer Faxanadu to Zelda 2, but Zelda 2 is still great. Far far better than most games that tried to rip it off. Like compare it to something like Battle of Olympus.

Also Castlevania 3 is far better than 1.

It's on par with Castlevania 1 and straight up better than Castlevania 2. Although Metroid and Megaman are better than all of the above. The thrust and blocking mechanics are fluid and when combined with the spells like Thunder , Reflect, and Fire absolutely does carry itself through the whole game and gives a sense of progress where enemies that were dangerous become a lot easier to deal with. Both Castlevania 1 and Zelda 2 came out the same year and I'd argue they're pretty comparable in combat variety and progress except Zelda 2 has mild RPG mechanics while Castlevania has at least some weapon variety

It's not completely unredeemable, and there's plenty of times I liked about it like the addition of caves functioning as actual levels and not just single rooms, towns with NPCs to interact with, the magic meter. But the hard focus on dungeon crawling and core melee combat over non-linear exploration and item interactivity that do different things was a misstep.

Correct. And it's better than II. I can drop a bomb in 1 that functions as AoE damage source if I time it right near a group of enemies, and then I can use that bomb to blow up a wall that gives me access to a secret on the overworld, or a another route in the dungeon. You have to position yourself around enemies to accurately stab them like Darknuts or cheese them with the Magic Rod if you can tank enough damage. In II, you just jump, slash their head, and they die. That's about it.

Iron Knuckles in II are way more interesting than just having to get behind darknuts in 1. 1's combat is just problem solving and positioning , 2 has both of those and adds a bit more with needing more pattern recognition and reaction speed for projectile spam and more complex enemy movement

Which one? The ORIGINAL Dragon Slayer that's basically a giant block block pushing game where you have to push your house around to store coins in it? Only if you're interested in the history of video games since it was influential on super early JRPGs. Personally it's a bit too archaic for me. I really don't know much about the series as a whole though.

Yeah, I'm not sure how you could miss it when there's pretty much a hint for everything in the game that requires you to use a spell or item in the world in the correct spot. Most people just start skipping NPCs because they think they say nothing of value, when in reality people in rooms or the first ones that come on screen give you blatant directions or provide a clear hint on what to do next.

Zelda 1's combat is weird because it never really feels like you're actually fighting anything. Most of the enemies barely seem to react to your presence. I know that technically they have different AIs for when they just wander vs when they're actively targetting you but it really just feels like a leap to say that you're ever fighting the darknuts.
Pausing to change items around every room also feels like shit and not doing it means that you're chasing keese around with your sword which is also shit, but if you play through ZClassic or something else that adds better item management then it can be pretty fluid and fun.

Put it down. Play a better game. Otherwise just know combat doesn't work and you absolutely have to just abuse the jumping-attack trick. Jump and attack on the way down and the shielded enemies won't know how to block it. Otherwise they just cheat and don't take damage even if you strike below/above their shields.
Seriously, the game is so combat focused and the combat just doesn't work. It's not worth the time unfortunately. Listen to the OST, look at the art, play another Zelda.

I love this game's atmosphere, wandering around the map, big open blue skies and sea, running through sprawling stone palaces with catchy music. I'll never understand people dismissing NES games for graphics.

>The ORIGINAL Dragon Slayer that's basically a giant block block pushing game where you have to push your house around to store coins in it?
To be fair I already play CDDA so that's not asking much, also yes /v/ is dying for whatever reason

1980s NP was bimonthly. There are more volumes of Nintendo Power from 1990 alone than the entire 1980s.

>Everything else just walks backwards or bumrushes you
Yeah but then there's terrain or different kinds of enemies coming at you at once with different attack patterns as well. There aren't a lot of different movement patterns enemies have but for 1987 it's not bad. There's still more movement involved in 2 than 1, 1 is all about reading patterns and positioning

Using items in different ways is fun, yes. That's more involved than anything in II.

I like using multi-layered tools that give me access to different options. I'm not saying it's "so good" (this is Zelda) but it's fun, and way better than just jump slashing everyone or spamming Thunder to blow up everything in screen that I don't need to place and time.

Farming blue slimes for mp drops by laving and re-entering a room can go a long way once you get the healing spell.
