People do still play things like 2k's NFL/ESPN 2k5 because of it's comparative quality. Otherwise it's out of necessity because games stopped being made (NCAA 14 prior to last year, College Hoops 2k8, the last NCAA MVP baseball was 2007, NCAA 2006 on the PS2 is still broadly considered the best college football game)

I think MyCareer is some of the funniest shit because of this stuff. In spite of being naturally disinclined to bash people over what they do for fun, I'm increasingly coming of the opinion that anyone who enjoys watching any kind sportsball is a complete simpleton. Not only is sportsball ridiculously dull, but sports fans always have the worst takes on everything, and most of the dunning-kruger charlatans who are ruining every industry also love watching sportsball. And the players themselves seem to be a bunch of crybaby animals almost across the board.

The fact that they'd pay $60+ for a roster update year after year just helps cement this belief.

I won't condemn all sports because combat sports are interesting, most smart people carve out an exception for them, and most of the industry is fairly based.

Smart game devs knew that in order to make these games suitable for vidya they had to strip back a lot of the rules, speed up the game, and take loose definitions of physics/reality. There was a clear golden age for these types of games (Golden age: NBA Jam, NFL Blitz, NHL Hitz) followed by stuff like NFL Street and NBA Street which tried to bring some of what we were missing from the bygone arcade-centric sports games while adapting them appropriately for home consoles.
