why was persona 3 so good? i mean, persona 5 has it beat for sure when it comes to being "cool" but persona 3 just did something right that 5 didn't, and i can't put my finger on what exactly

That's the crux of it. Persona 5 is actively trying to be cool. Everything from the music, to the outfits, to the moves, to how Joker has an entire attic to himself to how everyone's eager to lick his taint. While Persona 3 is just effortlessly cool by giving you a more realistic take on being a school kid in the big city (within the confines of a JRPG), combined with how melancholy it can be at times, it makes for a chiller, more relaxed experience compared to 5.

Simple, it had the best story , arguably the best music, the best characters, best theme.
Back then it was only the shitty outdated graphics and gameplay that held it back, but now with the remake it's simply THE best.
P5 is all style but not a lot of gripping story or characters
