Can I play Dissidia on my PSP if I only played Final Fantasy 1 to 4? Are there spoilers about the characters or anything else I need to know?

That's a weird selection of FF games. Only really makes sense if you're playing the pixel remasters in order and suddenly got bored and decided to try Dissidia instead.

Anyways, The only actual twist given away really by any of the plots is the part about Golbez. Most of the other story lines are only loosely related to their base game stories.

it is mostly an arena brawler, story doesn't matter. having played the games might give you some better insight into the designs or some of their opening/victory lines, but that's about it. they reference their stories, but you don't need to know them to understand what is going on nor will they spoil them outright for you. dissidia and 012 are amazing, though. you really only need to play 012, it is more of an upgrade than an actual sequel and there is enough content that you won't be hankering for another one right after. i say play it, the game is truly one of the greats and it is a damn shame that they never even made a remastered version of it for home release.

I didn't finish a single Final Fantasy game before playing Dissidia, except quitting FF7 right before the final boss if you count that. For the most part, this game has no freaking plot you'd want to pay attention to.

dissidia and dissidia 012 are, but they are PSP only. you will miss out on multiplayer, but singleplayer is good enough that an emulator is worth playing it on.you really only need to play 012, though, as it is a direct upgrade and there isn't really any story to speak of in the first.
dissidia NT is a piece of shit, don't bother with that.

Dissidia 012 is the only one worth playing. It's a straight upgrade of the first game (it includes the entire story mode of the first, I think the only thing it cuts is the duel colosseum mode). Dissidia NT is a different genre entirely, made by a different dev, and is terrible.

012, then, is a 3D arena fighter with absolutely shitloads of single player content. Probably 100+ hours of story mode (if you like Kingdom Hearts you'll be right at home, it's crammed full of Nomura nonsense, and not in a bad way). Good roster/playstyle variety, characters to level up and gear, a rock hard endgame campaign with a whole open world to explore, tons of fanservice, runs perfectly on emulator. It's my personal pick for the best game on the PSP, and I think everyone else would put it in the top 5 at the very least. Bear in mind the demo is actually the prologue to the game with a story segment that isn't in the full game, so you'll want to play that as well.

At the time, I was so mad that, after having played Duodecim for a couple of days after getting it on day of launch, having saved up money especially for it, while it is a great game and is the better one, I realized it was practically Dissidia DLC, and renders my copy of Dissidia (the first one) obsolete. it was a lot like KH final mix, FFX international, or FFXII zodiac age. it was mostly just an upgrade of the first game with extra features. there was even a save transfer so you could keep a lot (but not all) of the work you had put in with the first game.

Dissidia is an entirely new story that just happens to use characters from Final Fantasy, the heroes and the opposing villains.
The game itself has a database on basically everyone and important plot details are typically shared in-story as the characters talk to one another.
Though you can also just imagine that since Warrior of Light and Garland both from from the same came, it's fairly obvious that they've got beef with one another.

What does get interesting is how the stories call back to surface details that everyone skipped over in the original games, such as Garland secretly being Chaos himself.
