Because the half assed it.

They had an amazing opportunity to take a flawed, albeit amazing game and polish the rough edges instead they just phoned it in and released it in a buggy state.

They should have gotten Beamdog to do it, they did a fucking incredible job with NWN1 and are still updating it and releasing content for it.

I like the original only based off nostalgia because it was the game my uncle pirated for me before i bought the real version, which was then stolen by thieves. Then over a decade later i bought it on steam and played till i got the paladin, thats the furthest i got.

the encounters scale to your level so for the most part which one you head to first shouldn't matter
but what does matter is your class's strengths and weaknesses and fighter doesn't have enough control for multiple opponents till getting cleave

I'd rate Mask of the Betrayer as one of the best RPG's i've ever played, but it's so shit from a technical perspective and incredibly jank and buggy that it's hard to recommend. The worst part is almost everything that was bad would have been so easy to address with a re-release like this.

Who knows, maybe even this half assed re-release will drum up enough enthusiasm for modders to have a crack at actually fixing a lot of it beyond just bloating it with AI upscaled textures.

there's not a lot of strategy available at low levels, i think for prisoners it's mostly that the bigger races are higher level spawns than the smaller races, but they're all unarmored and don't have much for weapons so priority is mostly just done on a whim
