I am currently playing as a Stormlord (spear and shield lightning cleric), but the character is cheated - I used console commands to add a feat so I can get to play how I like faster.
I previously beat the base campaign with a blackguard - a rogue/anti-paladin type character, but it wasn't mechanically that strong. I switched to a new character, a crit based fighter/weapon master for Mask of the Betrayer. That campaign is full of undead and elementals, so crit/sneak attack is bad. Everything has huge health pools too.

If you want to play from level 1 to level 30 with the same character, the whole shardbearer story, probably go for some sort of cleric. Install the MetaPrepa mod, it lets you autocast buffs instantly outside of combat. Big for sanity.
