I had this happen as a kid
Someone gave me a strategy guide for some game and I brought it to school and read it during reading time because it was better than reading real shit. Then some months later I ended up getting the game from a thrift shop and playing/beating it and I had a fun appreciation and relationship with it going in despite having never played it.

Ikaruga fans don't tend to be that bad because they don't usually play shumps at all. Their stance is the genre isn't interesting but that one game looks cool.

Ikaruga used to have this weird meme where people would talk about it was an incredibly deep and complex evolution of the genre and made every other shooting game look bad. Even though they thought shooting games were shit and never played them so they had no frame of reference, and they didn't want to play Ikaruga either. It was strange. Most classic shmups are about "not having to dodge enemy shots". It's all about misdirecting shots, killing enemies before they can shot, or hiding behind cover.

Ikaruga is a sequel to Radiant Silvergun, and it's obvious how it iterates on that game is you know/played RS.
