Did anyone else not get this meme the first time they saw it or was it just me? I thought the caption just meant it was a picture from the first time the guy played, and I thought the point of the pic was that he doesn't look excited at all, he looks pissed off.

A lot of people who claim to be fans of Nier Automata just jack off to 2B's ass and at best watched a LP/stream or the anime. It's easier than ever now to be exposed to media without ever personally experiencing it.

I had this happen as a kid
Someone gave me a strategy guide for some game and I brought it to school and read it during reading time because it was better than reading real shit. Then some months later I ended up getting the game from a thrift shop and playing/beating it and I had a fun appreciation and relationship with it going in despite having never played it.

This, I mean just look at /v/ today. The majority of this board don't even play games, opting to just watch Twitch streams and parrot YouTubers opinions

The question I have is why? Why would you even want to interact with people about a game you haven't engaged with?

Ikaruga fans don't tend to be that bad because they don't usually play shumps at all. Their stance is the genre isn't interesting but that one game looks cool.
I find them better than the people who say Persona is awesome and they love it but still haven't played it, at least. That's fucking weird.

Why Ikaruga? It's a quick pick-up and play game. I imagine most people who have ever heard of it have played the first stage.
It's not like Earthbound where the game is a commitment and a lot of fans are just lorefags.

I joined a stream for a game I was curious about a few years ago. The dude would constantly stop and ask everyone to like & subscribe. I'm not even joking, he did it like every 2 - 3 minutes, barely even touched the damn game at all.

I felt like Chandler from Friends when Ross was too nervous to start playing his music, and felt the same: "OMG JUST PLAY!"

Ikaruga used to have this weird meme where people would talk about it was an incredibly deep and complex evolution of the genre and made every other shooting game look bad. Even though they thought shooting games were shit and never played them so they had no frame of reference, and they didn't want to play Ikaruga either. It was strange. Mostly been forgotten about these days though.

Not very good at it.

The tragedy is that Ikaruga is a solid game, but it can never live down that reputation of being the "hipster" game, so people trash it mainly because of that.

Can you imagine if the hip popular STG was Dodonpachi instead and SHMUP fans called it crap forever after explicitly because it was popular with non-fans for a bit?

fandom “culture”

people (zoomers) are more interested in being in a community moreso than engaging with the product the community is supposedly formed around. It’s why ARG/lore slop always takes off because it feeds into that false sense of community and engagement.

Correct, because it was an example to illustrate my point about how much flak Ikaruga gets.

That's what I meant. My language was loose but the point was that Ikaruga was popular with non-fans so fans felt the need to downplay it. It reminded me of how /m/ spent some time talking down TTGL for a while since non-mecha fans liked it so much.

Most classic shmups are about "not having to dodge enemy shots". It's all about misdirecting shots, killing enemies before they can shot, or hiding behind cover.

Wasn't the point that because newbies don't know about those games, they can't tell that it's an iteration and instead declare it unique?
Ikaruga is a sequel to Radiant Silvergun, and it's obvious how it iterates on that game is you know/played RS.
