>To understand why this is a bad thing, we have to confront a hard truth that few people seem to want to face about the Zelda games, including Nintendo themselves. But here it is: the physics system is nothing remarkable. Before you get your codpiece in a twist, keep in mind: that doesn't equate to mediocre gameplay. As a whole, it's hugely elevated by generally a great open world, player freedom, load-out options, and some unique supplemental mechanics like climbing, champion powers and cooking.
>But in terms of actual complexity, there's not much going on. There's not much *depth*. And that wouldn't be a problem. Except that the series has increasingly leaned on its simulation elements more and more as time has gone by, while refusing to implement basic adventure elements such as character development, creative questlines, a plot that makes sense or even an interesting setting. Which leaves you with physics as your one and only way to engage with the game.
>So prepare to build, again and again, and again and again and again.

This was 6 years ago today. Before Tears of the Kingdom, before Echoes of Wisdom. Looking back, do you believe he was right about the direction the Zelda series is taking?

If this was before TotK, it was actually incredibly prescient of him to pick up on

>character development, creative questlines, plot
None of that is depth
I hate storyfags so much it's unreal

I'm not a Zelda fag, but I literally can't imagine playing a 100+ hour adventure game where the stories and characters are totally inconsequential. Like if none of that shit matters, why not just cut the middleman and play Besiege or something

I'm not saying story shouldn't be there but when evaluating the depth of a videogame story is not important, it's window dressing. Some people will praise a braindead button masher if it shows them a Netflix original between levels.

>but when evaluating the depth of a videogame story is not important
You're conflating the two claims. He's not saying the game lacks depth because it has no story, he's saying the game lacks depth therefore it should have supplemental elements like a story

BotW had way more of a story and coherency than TotK did.
