The direction we're going it seems like everyone really does want every minor inconvenience to be "solved" by the highest level of government possible. Don't like the charging cable coming with that phone? Better get an entire continent to ban all but one connector type.

I think it's better to start an indie dev yoitube channel than actually making a game.

By making a game that's actually unique. If that proves to be too difficult then you can't really criticise all the other buzzs for failing as well.

Define “quirky”.

If it’s an actually unique and novel premise, it’s fine, but if it’s “Earthbound inspired Retro game that’s an allegory for depression”, then it’s lame.

for every creative person there are hundreds of lazy talentless hacks trying to copy something successful
this isn't unique to video games.

A lot of indie games rely on being quirky in order to be successful. They don't have a big team or resources, so they need that to be noticeable. Take Fez, for example. It was huge when it came out and relied on a gimmick that nobody considers unique or impressive anymore. I'd rather have a lot of options to choose even if most of them are bad than being limited to consuming the slop corporations put out today.

Sometimes normalfags really have to be tardwrangled or else the whole medium goes to shit trying to cater to them. Indie being generic are a non-issue as it's not like they sell that much to begin with.

the last good aaa game was released nearly a decade ago
indies are the only place that experimentation happens. paradoxically, the more money you have and the larger your team is the worse your game will be.

Indie games are cookie cutter because of technical/skill limitations from amateurs who don't know how to organize well enough like AA devs can , with the exceptions being hardcore autism passion projects like Kenshi taking 12 fucking years to make

Most people try pretty hard to accomplish what they want but do not have insane amounts of patience to actually do something different with their limited time. You *think* you want to make something unique until you really understand how much sheer amount of effort and time it takes to do so

Rain World. very punishing, one of a kind, focused on both enviromental and mechanical exploration. slow-paced and rewards patience and thinking, but with frantic creature encounters.
Cogmind. one of the best designed roguelikes. a ton of mechanical depth and variety, very steep learning curve and unexpectedly (for the genre) inriguing lore and store that's fed diagetically.
NEO scavenger. unconventional pick, a bit rough around the edges. turn-based postapoc survival game with hardcore design and a lot of room for varied builds and roleplaying. bullshit at times, some text quests have instakill options, so think twice before risking.
Creeper World 4. unconventional (if you aren't familiar with the series), main gimmick is that you fight blob that spreads radially, and most of your buildings are mobile. fun, but can get repetitive if you aren't fan of TD. slow paced and has real time pause.
