Romance is usually poorly done in everything. People treat it like a checklist instead of this constantly changing, ongoing thing. You hardly ever see much beyond the initial and honeymoon stages when those are the most brief and arguably shallow moments of a relationship. It makes sense though since those are probably the most outright "exciting" parts and writing stuff like a romance 5 years in is way beyond the scope of most works

Romance doesn't require conflict, though. You really think people would complain about a quest that's literally just a date - going to some nice place and talking for a while, maybe a fade-to-black sex scene to top it off - just because there's no combat? I feel like that's exactly what people want out of romance. You could also have something akin to the loyalty missions from Mass Effect 2, where, once you're close enough, she tells you something about her past and you agree to help her do whatever she feels she has to do, with the two of you growing closer as a result
