Recently finished RE3 remake and while it was a pretty game overall it felt short in comparison to the previous remakes. Which version of RE4 do you recommend?

OG RE4 is still undisputed IMO

Re4make adds more resource management, and more setpieces, and overall just feels more bloated and the pacing suffers
RE4 OG is still one of the snappiest and best third person shooters ever with pitch perfect pacing
Like, I literally started another OG playthrough on a whim and I literally can't put it down

You might as well play both. Anyone recommending you to play the remake and not the original is retarded, they're practically completely different games with different appeal. The OG is iconic for a reason.

You can get both for a total of $25 on one of the Capcom sales that happen at least once a month, which I definitely recommend you do. They both have their strengths and are worth playing

Remake Leon is ironically less mobile that the tank controls OG Leon because of "muh realism" inertia retardation meaning that Leon's hands shake like he grabbed an unprotected 2000W electrical wire and moves like he is a car that is constantly accelerating and braking.
Anyway the games are different enought that you should play both. The Remake doesn't replace the original in any way, same as the 2 and 3 remakes.

they're both some of my favorite action games ever.

Play both. Play the original first, and then play the remake and see how you feel about it so you can form your own opinion on it.

I think the remake is as replayable the original (it's fun), but the gameplay of the original still feels more fun and is the one I prefer overall.

Both.
I mean it.

the original is a more neatly put together arcade action game with a brisk pace and smaller scope. the remake leans more into being a horror/thriller experience, and slows things down a bit. I think they're both worth a playthrough with the original getting the genuflect for being the capcom og.
