Its both. Thats the whole idea. There is no concept for "too far" for Cenobites. In the novel and first film Pinhead calls the cenobites "explorers in the further regions of experience.". Those who start to like it turn into cenobites, they get "converted" into their ideology. Most won't because its too much. The "Puzzle" of the lament configuration isn't actually that hard. I think it's a total of five moves starting with a rotation of the center circle.

It also kind of takes control of you if you're the type that the cenobites are seeking. It basically solves itself for you, through you.

It just combined the original box tricking perverts into more than they bargained for, and Franks killing spree into one big ritual. Cenobites don't really have set rules in the novel or the first film, the box is just a way to summon them (or unsummon them). No. If you had any desire to see what happens if you open the box, they take you anyway. Curiosity is still a desire. The girl was basically a robot so the cenobites left her alone and focused on the doctor instead who made her solve the box.

I dislike 2 because it turns to shit when Kristy and Tiffany enter Hell. Tiffany gets a hell sequence that is just a procession of horror cliches: a dark carnival, a spooky clown (juggling his own eyeballs - sick!) and the expected Hall of Mirrors scene. Very fucking lame.

Kristy finds herself in Frank's personal hell and it seems that, despite Frank's insolent escape in the first film, the cenobites are going easy on him now. His torment is that he is eternally cock-teased by spectral women who fade to nothing whenever he tries to touch them. Compared to the total corporal destruction and agony that Frank suffered in The Hellbound Heart/Hellraiser, this "torment" looks like a pleasant vacation. The frustrated Frank tries to rape Kristy, and seems to have her cornered. Ever resourceful, Kristy comes up with a plan of action: she pulls a bedsheet from one the spectral sluts and throws it over the candles on Frank's dresser, where it catches fire. Frank screams: "NOOOOOOO!" as his power to harm Kristy is taken away. And this happens because...? Because what? It makes no fucking sense.

People complain that Hellraiser 3 was basically a Freddy movie, but the Elm Street influence can already be seen in Hellraiser 2. The personal hell sequences are much like the nightmares in Elm Street, and the dream logic of certain moments (Frank's burning bedsheet) is also comparable.

If a writer mainly focuses on the gay experience, they are perceived as a Gay Writer and this limits their readership considerably.
