Everything but my hard drive and GPU is nearly 12 years old. I spent 2k for everything back then, then bought a GPU for $350 5 years ago and got a keyboard and 2 monitors for free from work last year. I'm now willing to spend no more than 2k for a major upgrade that I will make last even longer, as that price buys like AT LEAST 3x as much power and memory as it did when I built my current computer.

Depends on how much money you have, obviously. Even with the highest-end consumer stuff you can't really go truly insane. Like if you build a 9950X3D + 5090 system it's not going to go into truly insane spending levels, obviously that's far from optimal value but it's not like you're spending 5 or 6 figures.

Now if you're thinking about buying extremely expensive shit like top-end Threadrippers with 4x enterprise GPUs then you'd better have a very good reason because a system like that can most certainly go into insanely expensive territory.
