If you IGNORE the story, how good of a game is Metroid Other M?

I like this game and I would stomp anyone in the neck to defend it.

I feel the same about Skyward Sword, Starfox Zero and Starfield.

Ignoring the story, itโ€™s not a good game, just ok.
>forced sideways Wiimote control style where you have to point at the screen for first-person aiming during combat
>shaking the controller to dodge
>VN segments during story moments where you have to pixel hunt to progress
>simplistic combat where most of it is button mashing and shaking the controller โ€” occasionally, the game will require some weird on-off solution to defeat a boss. The last boss is the absolute worst example of this
>not many skills or upgrade to find, since the story gives most of what matters to you
>very linear level design without much off-the-path exploration
>can only really backtrack at the very end to get energy tanks and missiles you missed
>too many memberberry enemies and bosses that donโ€™t match the gameโ€™s visual style

There's a mod that literally makes it fun: "Metroid Other M - Maxximum Edition"
It changes the music to classic remixes
Has analog support
And even chops up the cutscenes so they're less jarring.

I never had too much of a problem with the story, it's just dumb. The gameplay however is pretty trash becausr of several terrible game design decisions.

Gameplay issues aside, you can't ignore the story because the cutscenes are unskippable on the first playthrough.

It would still be shit:
>movement locked to eight directions / dpad-only despite the Wii having many different controller options
>combat consist of looking at the enemy's general direction and spam the shoot button because auto aim does all the work
>some enemies can only be damaged by missiles and to shoot them you bring everything to a halt to point the wiimote awkwardly at the screen to enter a clunky 1rst person mode because motion controls had to be there
>later on combat becomes a rollfest
>pixel hunting

I can feel the developers screaming out in agony at the fucking Wiimote-only control scheme they were forced to use and design the game around

Like a 5/10. Structurally, it's worse Metroid Fusion and the combat's jank, casualized Team Ninja shit. That said, for all of its questionable decisions like concentration and missiles locked to first-person pixel hunts, everything does function as it should, and there's the occasional cool idea here and there like shinesparking in 3D. Overall though, the gameplay is tolerable but nowhere near good enough to overshadow the issues with its story and characters, which is why no one really considers that angle.
