We're to the point where the smart choice is to own the last gen console and not buy the latest shit. Being a PS4 owner hasn't let me down this entire generation.

Consoles are secondary, but still necessary. The newest version of Densha de Go, for example, was never released for PCs, and the emulation of the Switch version is quite poor because it is one of those games that does not receive attention from emulator programmers.
Games like this, however, which are completely unplayable on PCs, are becoming increasingly rare.

The PS2 era of consoles just had an enormous offering of games and a long support cycle. They were still dropping a Pro Evolution game for it in 2013. Nowadays with bloated development times you have games that are getting announced as launch titles for the next console that will pass their release window and become a launch title for the next console. Rockstar is notorious for that now. The last GTA game they released was during the PS3's lifespan. The PS3 itself had 2 main line GTA games, and the PS2 had 3, not to mention Vice City Stories and Liberty City Stories. If you wanted the experience those games offered you had plenty of options.

OG Xbox was great and Halo became something of a cultural phenomenon, even i am opposed to the trend it set in FPS in some ways. To say there was never any good era for them is just blatantly lying. Even the 360 had it's worth. They stopped being a serious competitor because of Don Mattrick. I mean if you look at OG xbox there were so many original ideas on it (phantom dust comes to mind) that i don't think it can be written off as some thing that simply just sold well, rather than it bringing something to the table. Microsoft forced Halo to become what it was. I hate them for what they did; it's not about Microsoft giving Halo a chance, it's about Microsoft killing the spirit of gaming putting untold amounts of money into to Halo and killing everything else. Halo started to become buggy and overhyped the moment Microsoft fully sank their claws into Bungie starting with Halo 2. It's a real shame, the OG Xbox and 360 did have some great gems on them but since Microsoft didn't care about them nor did their fans, Xbox became the Halo box. Microsoft also had a bad influence on third parties which created this AAA nonsense of today and caused the death of Sony Computer Entertainment for Sony Interactive Entertainment. Everything fun about gaming, PC, arcade, console, handheld, died when Microsoft entered.
