Pal of mine still holds it in high regard
Finally started it myself and it's pretty nice for what it is and its time
'Course there are many other ways to do that first-person suit concept but it has a nice balance between feeling more real/immersive and still feeling like a game
No lack of love for the 2D/side-scrolling(?) ones either: the spirit of adventure is enjoyable throughout

Even at a brief glance I can see the charm of the game mentioned in action

What I enjoy about games of that era is that they barely knew how to make 3d games. They just took 2d games and translated them to 3d. It creates a charming design and unique control schemes you can't get anymore.
Then as usual they remaster the game and add dual analog sticks and it becomes the same as any other game.

Many devs struggle to even make a game, much less a memorable experience, so it kinda adds up in a sad way.

My only issues are it needs faster movement like the 2d games and the "You must collect these thing-a-ma-jigs before beating the game" stuff is a little annoying. Otherwise top tier game

I always wondered if people who played Myst around the time it came out felt similarly to how I felt playing Metroid Prime when I was younger. I feel like, compared to the earlier titles, Prime actually fails pretty hard on being a 'mechanically' engaging from moment to moment. Platforming/shooting are somewhat de-emphasized compared to the 2D titles...

Yet I can't bring myself to be overly troubled with it? It's a world that you can just sorta' sink into and soak up, and the devs did a surprisingly good job of making it feel real and lived-in. I felt like I was picking through ruins and reconstructing what happened to the people who had once lived there from fragmented bits and pieces.

prime is better with traditional controls, being able to look around at the environment from more angles makes the game more interesting
it also lets you pull off stuff like this instead of just locking on to every single engagement
enemy because you can't hit them otherwise

Isn't it ironic that Samus finally became Metroid with Dread? I would imagine most confuse the two but no more. Samus literally is Metroid.

prime would be perfect if phazon mines wasnt such a slog. I always drop my replay at that area. Personally I always found prime 2 to be the more fun game to replay

i wish it was less linear, i think the intended route through the game is a bit weak since you're constantly dipping into areas then running back through them to get to another area, some parts are highlights though like >>716190729

I only played the remaster but I can tell you that it is an incredibly based game. I beat it twice once on normal once on hard. A must own if you have Switch.

not him but i've been a prime 1 diehard for 20+ years, the remaster makes the game look even better (it already looked very good) and the literal only downside to it is that it loses dynamic lighting on shots going down dark corridors + the three reflective metal wall adornments in chozo ruins do not reflect anymore due to this lighting change (it's a hardware limitation)

if you want to play the original then go for it but the remaster is extremely good

don't forget the remaster actually restores some visual effects that the trilogy release was missing, like the particle effects on the cannon when charging it up (most obvious being the frost with the ice beam) and water dynamically rippling on the surface
it also adds some new ones, like the visor interior lighting up with shots and on the map screen, additional rain effects on the arm cannon when looking up and looking down in the chozo overworld, certain types of beams passing through ice (I don't actually know if this was in the original), fixing the hand signs samus makes for the beams in the x ray visor (I don't think they match the symbols still but now they're all distinct from each other), cleaning up and polishing old animations from the original that make her move less like a robot, basically instant load times between doors
there's also some downgrades like the flying pirates not causing a massive explosion when they suicide but that seems like an overall change to remove bright flashing effects which is present in other areas (like the sap bombs you can shoot to blow up, they don't flash white when they explode anymore, also the lights coming through that one room after the generator on the way to ice beam don't blind you when you walk through them) and overall just a massive lighting overhaul and basically a high quality remake of every asset in the game, many rooms have godrays and really interesting baked lighting that they just didn't have before, and you can actually read details and see graphics on monitors in space pirate areas and the like
there's also the new look for the thermal visor which some people bitched about but I really like because it looks more like an actual thermal camera and is more immersive, and they added even more effects like samus's cannon dynamically heating up and cooling down as you shoot it instead of just palette swapping everything when you turn the visor on
even dead enemy's bodies slowly go cold

Prime is a bad Metroid game. It's a a bad FPS. It's a bad game. Instead of faithfully translating Super to 3D, they made boring tank simulator.
