With the release of Donkey Kong Bananza I've seen people trying to determine where it fits in the Mario "canon", well I will answer that question with another question, what is the timeline and canon of Looney Tunes, or classic Disney shorts or Mario's direct inspiration Popeye? The answer of course is nothing, there is no canon, Mario and by extension Donkey Kong takes place in a cartoon universe with loose at best continuity, why else do you think Mario has been a plumber, a doctor, a racer, a construction worker, an owner of a toy company or whatever else the game needs? Why else would Donkey Kong be a hero in his own games and a villain in Mario games. Why else would Bowser switch between a goofy dad or a menacing overlord? Because they are whatever the games need them to be so try to curb your autism.

the exact timeline of events doesn't matter, it just calls everything into question.

1. Apparently the entire DKC franchise is set like 20-30 years before the events of Donkey Kong and Super Mario.
2. If there are multiple DKs or not is called into question. Rare had it that Cranky was a previous DK, but this currently seems ignored by Nintendo.
3. It's unclear where DK fits into the timeline or if the events happened at all. It's unclear why DK would do that if he likes Pauline.
4. God damn no one would think "okay Super Mario Odyessy, yeah this is obviously set before the Donkey Kong Arcade game."

The only timeline Nintendo ever thought about was Zelda and that stopped in like 2011.
