Nah, it was literally over the shoulder 3rd person. Alot of work was put into it but I only ever played it once. I just remember it because I was actually astonished how they bent a rts into a 3rd person game.

There would be no WoW without warcraft3, regardless of how simultaneous their development was. This was one of the first if not the first successful genre jump for an IP, and because RTS games were actually a respected genre back then, W3 was the only way to jumpstart a franchise. It was a different time, gaming wasn't the McDonald's gutter trash tier it is today, that's why RTS was something.

Most of those shitty mini games were better designed and balanced then modern AAA titles. They were also fun.

It's the best blizzard game and the best RTS game in terms of impact but best game ever is a bridge too far.

Nah just the grand story campaign alone qualifies it for the title, and then you have the insane production values, the regular multiplayer, the custom multiplayer, the world editor etc

There's literally no other game in existence that offers so much quality in its single-player handmade department, while still having a ridiculously rich custom/multiplayer aspect

I'm actually replaying through the campaign right now and while I don't think the upkeep system is bad in pvp it absolutely makes sense for the campaigns where you can't really tempo your AI opponent.

I don't think the two are mutually exclusive, Chrono Trigger is one of the best games ever in my opinion but I wouldn't call it the best JRPG for example, the standards for a general "best game" and "best in genre" are different enough for this to be possible

playing custom games online in 2004 was access to loads of different genres and if you had decent internet you could play around the clock since there'd always be someone online. It was even interesting seeing what games were popular in what region.

Only played through the campaign once though, that was enough. Never played ladder.
