I wanted to start testing the waters with linux and shit too but I can't be bothered to do my hard drive cleaning because I have some hoarder mentality where I think I will need every single file I ever downloaded, so fucking retarded I really hate OCD.

I'm not new to Linux but I am new to gaming on it (used to dual boot). I installed steam and the games I've tried just work. Experience will be better on AMD but even Nvidia is getting there these days.
My understanding is that you shouldn't try to install steamos on a desktop computer.
I've heard good things about EndeavourOS. I've never tried it myself but people say it just works. It's based on Arch linux (SteamOS is also based on Arch) and seems to be quite easy to use.

Can't help with the OCD but maybe try finding an laptop to install linux on first. It's how I learned.

Also, if you're new to gaming on linux, this site is important:
https://www.protondb.com/
You probably already know about it but it's incredibly useful to check compatibility for games or potential fixes for problems you might have.
You'll be surprised how compatible linux actually is with almost all games these days. Search a few games that you enjoy/want to play and I can almost guarantee that users on ProtonDB will report them to work quite well, a lot of times without any tweaks at all.
Biggest problem with gaming on linux is that some big multiplayer games don't work because of anti cheat.
https://areweanticheatyet.com/
This may or may not be important to you, but it's good to be aware of this limitation.
The anti cheat problem isn't the fault of linux btw, it's the developers who don't want to support it.

Why would you need to uninstall your games before switching to Linux? And you don't need to tidy up your data; you need to back that shit up. You know the Linux installer is just going to format the selected partition anyway, right? I assume you're not trying to shrink your Windows partition to make room for a new one if you're switching over "completely".
>where the fuck can i get the steamos 3.7?
Holy shit dude, no. SteamOS is for handhelds. Just install a desktop distro. Judging by how clueless you are, you should probably try Linux Mint and stay away from anything Arch-based, and you certainly shouldn't be jumping through hoops to use spmething that doesn't support desktop usage.

That site can probably be useful in some way but one thing to keep in mind is that it's users are retarded and often have a very loose definition of what "compatibility" mean.

becuase I needed to make room to move files from the windows drive to the other drive so I can install linux on it

You probably could have just copied your Documents, Pictures, etc. folders instead of spending all that time preparing to copy the whole C: drive. You're not going to need Program Files, System32, and all that other bullshit. But if you were so disorganized that you can't save the files you need without backing up the contents of the entire disk then carry on.

It's basically fine, but there are some bad games that insist on not enabling Linux anticheat for some reason or which run highly privileged spyware that doesn't work on Linux.
>what would you recommend?
If your computer is old, then you probably won't have too many issues with something like Linux Mint, but that means needing to deal with older packages.
>SteamOS
It's Arch with some sane defaults that is harder to install new software on. You can ultimately just use Arch with archinstall or even just EndeavorOS/CachyOS which both have installers. The problem with Arch is mostly just that it doesn't do some post-setup or post-update steps for you, but if you read the news page, then you will be informed of any steps you need to take after an update, though manual intervention isn't required that often.
>>716216535
I would also recommend pcgamingwiki and even if you're not going use Arch, you should still use the Arch wiki, since it guides you through the basics, intermediate knowledge and troubleshooting for using new software.
>>716219987
I would still recommend transferring those files to another filesystem that isn't NTFS, since NTFS is garbage that Microsoft insists on just to be difficult.
>>716220659
You'll still have to make a new partition for Linux to live on. Get a new SSD, they're not even expensive.
