Because the subhuman plebeian masses decided they wanted developer railroaded Diablo 2 clone themepark grindfests that WoW started.
Fuck man I wish we got more actual Player driven MMO’s like SW Galaxies. Imagine a Kenshi like MMO where people build their own towns and eventually empires. Making EVE Online like battles over shit, instead of the current “race to grind for 6000+ hours for a chance to Raid (Poopy the master of scoopy) raid boss that drops the glooby mount with 1% chance” that people finish and datamine in 3 seconds after launch. Is the end all be all and then wait 2 years to repeat it all over again.

Everyone wants the sandbox MMORPG revolution that would free us from the WoW-clone oppressors but nobody wants to work in the coal mines.
