How do devs solve the first person combat problem in first person RPGs? It's the biggest pain point and weakness to the genre that is otherwise the most immersive approach to existing in a simulated fantasy world.

You've got classic style. Play a simple attack animation and roll dice like it's D&D (Ultima Underworld / Daggerfall / Morrowind style). This style kinda sucks, but works well with the numbers based gameplay of classic RPGs.

You've got modern juice style. Basically Skyrim or Avowed. Play animations and enemies have some procedural hit reactions. Relies on animations, effects and sounds to sell it. Stats and dice rolls impact how much damage is done, but a hit is a hit. Still manages to be pretty dull as there's no real strategy to it.

You've got directional melee combat style. Kingdom Come Deliverance and Mount & Blade have both explored this a bit. More technical and fun sword fights as you must aim and parry, but makes combat against non humanoids difficult.

Well anons, got any other ideas on how to make first person combat fun in a fantasy RPG game?

Character skill vs player skill is a major issue.
KCD gives the illusion of player skill,
while something like morrowind (melee) is entirely based on character skill.

It's a dilemma
you want your stats and choices to matter,
but in moment to moment combat, you also want to be rewarded for being quick on your feet.
honestly, Skyrim kind of gets it right. Even though it feels janky,
it works well in the long term with different builds
if you're willing to look past the jank

First Person combat has potential I wish more games explored. Because you have total control of your aim, there needs to be a directionality or at least "aimed" element to the combat. Think jumping off a cliff and trying to slice a weak spot on a dragon's back, or trying to get under its belly to slice it there. Or maybe you're fighting a goblin with chunks of rough metal armor on it and you can swing for the chest or head armor and break it off, revealing the weak flesh underneath for a kill.

There is potential to do interesting things with first person melee combat, but the game will feel so significantly different with Mouse and Keyboard vs. controllers that it becomes a challenging balance. Making a first person melee game that's fun as fuck with mouse & keyboard is going to be very very hard with a controller, and that's where the money is so how do you balance it?

I think for good first person melee combat you need to essentially forget the skill point and item attack damage elements of RPGs. First person melee fights have to be quick, like 1 to 3 hits to kill most enemies. Lingering, long fights with tons of health are absolutely boring in first person. So I think these games should embrace RPG simulations around how you talk to NPCs, what you DO, and your abilities, but keep combat essentially like an action game.
