Psychology tells us that people grow out of bullying after highschool. Meanwhile people(like you two most likely) who are bullied in highschool are left with nothing but resentment and generally become more vile people as they age. It's not about being "toughened up" it's about basic empathy and understanding that you would not want to be turned into an internet picture for people to make fun of. Hard to explain, loses the personal experience value or local and it is not fun anymore at that point. When internet was "young" it was a bit novelty to make fun of people in pictures from otherside of the world but feel it's not really that fun overall. Like said there's nothing novel or personal about it, can find millions of funny pictures or videos of people if you want to.
