I made the next choice cause it was a bit too obvious. The rare was taken, there were no good white cards and of the red/black cards, suplex was easily the right answer.

There was a lot of variety in the archetypes and lots of fun and interesting cards around, mostly like FIN: reanimator, low-power tribal aggro, manifest, enchantress, all with lots of fun cards. you could even try mill.
also i think because Rooms were the main set mechanic, you never felt like you couldn't do anything, you essentially always had cards on hand

The build up was there during that time with yearly commander products, modern masters, commanderbait in every set plus things like Conspiracy, chase cards becoming a thing with BfZ, the border change with stickers, etc. 2015-2016 was the real transformation point.
