>be me, zoomer
>play PC shooter from the 90s/early 2000s
>there is no checkpoint system
>only way to not have to start the entire level over again when you die is to quicksave
So, uh, how am I supposed to approach this? There's nothing stopping me from just placing a quicksave every time I make the smallest bit of progress. Not only that, since these games have a limited amount of healing per level, it seems like you're rewarded for retaking every little gunfight if you take a bit too much damage, at the risk of getting to a point in the level where you're at low health with no healing available. The obvious problem is that saving optimally makes the game easy and boring. Did people just savescum their way through these games back in the day, or is there some way to balance the challenge?
