Super Metroid, hands down. The atmosphere is unmatched, that eerie isolation hits just right, and the map design is still peak Metroidvania. No hand-holding, no excessive tutorials, just you and Zebes. Plus, that escape sequence at the end? Goosebumps every time. It’s like the perfect blend of action, exploration, and mood.

For me it's the physics. People shit on them, and they're justified in doing so, but damn is it satisfying to master them. It feels like ballet once you get the nuances down and can walljump anywhere you damn well please. I need to see if there are any other Metroid clones with low gravity like Super's.

I never owned a NES, SNES or Gameboy advance, my first Nintendo system was the gamecube (before that I owned exclusively PC, Playstation and PS2). Therefore I only played Metroid Prime on Gamecube when it first came out and much later Samus Returns the 3DS game.

I started playing through the whole series now, since I still have the 3DS game and I can play the rest on Switch.

I played the original two games for a bit just to experience them. The first game has great atmosphere for a NES game. Metroid II doesn't look as nice since it's a gameboy game so it doesn't have the atmosphere, but the gameplay felt instantly smoother.

I'm not going to bother finishing those though, I'll just play the remakes of the first two games and then play Super Metroid, then Fusion, then Dread.

Super Metroid is king of the entire genre. OG Metroid is cool, and Dread is decent. None of the other games matter, especially not the joke that is the Prime series.

I love the atmosphere in SM but it's not without flaws. It has lot of issues common to sequels such as power creep that makes missiles useless, removing the satisfaction from finding powerups (and you don't really need lots of power bombs either desu)
Like a lot of SNES games it has too little challenge throughout most of the game. There are lots of enemies that were designed for crippled NES Samus, like the slow floor crawlers, which feel pointless now that she can crouch. You have so much HP that you're rarely threatened. The physics also feels a bit unresponsive compared to later entries.
It's probably the best Metroid game overall but let's not oversell it

Dread is near perfect. It just needed an extra area or two and to have another miniboss to spam onstead of the same two chozo robots.
ZM is fun, but too simplistic given its a remake of a nes game.
Returns hasn't made me return to play it again. Metroid 2 is easily the shittiest out of the 5.
Super is overrated. Very overrated.
Fusion is okay. Hard bosses but braindead exploration.
Overall
Dread > ZM > Fusion > Super > Returns
For the Prime series Ive only played Prime Remastered and thought it was okay at best. Way too much backtracking and fetch quests.

This. I was hoping Dread would dethrone it but it doesn't even come close.

Zero Mission is pretty good too, but being a remake of a game that already received a remake with Super Metroid doesn't do it any favors and the entire Zero Suit portion just feels like the Samus fanwank (emphasis on 'wank') creeping in. Call me a prude, but if it were up to me we'd never see Samus outside the suit at all. It's the original sin of the series.

Zero Mission. Level design isn't as tight as Super but I just love the way Samus controls. Everything is fast and snappy and it feels good, not wasting two buttons on diagonal aiming is great, and holding R for missiles is the only way they ever should have worked.

Gonna have to go with Prime. It just hit right for me and I was amazed at how well they were able to capture the feeling and put it into 3D. However, I will openly admit that Super Metroid is probably the peak of the series overall. It's just a perfect game.

Samus Returns is definitely overhated. I personally never liked Other M’s gameplay. I tried to play through it a couple times and ignored the story but the gameplay wasn’t doing it for me. I think it had some impressive visuals for a Wii game. Samus Returns would have been received better if not for the AM2R comparisons. It’s basically Dread part 0 and I think Dread is one of the best Metroid games alongside Super, Prime 1, and Zero Mission

Prime 1 is atmospheric as hell, I love it. Really like how all the visors, beams, and upgrades work with the UI and exploration/combat are very rewarding. And it's definitely the best for lore, logbooks/scans are a huge component for me.
There might be objectively better games (Super Metroid I think is absolutely sublime, a super-tight 2D experience that's rewarding to master and I flip-flop on these two as my absolute favorite of the genre) but Prime has a nostalgia boost going for it in my case.

It's not you. Symphony of the Night was the template for the "Metroidvania" genre and almost every game is trying to copy it instead of Metroid itself. It's half the reason why you have people that say Metroidvania isn't a real genre. "SotN-likes" is probably more descriptive a name.

Super. It hits the right balance.
The first 3 games had a different feeling.
Prime 1 and 2 are pretty good on that regard too, but I prefer the 2d gameplay.

For the 2D Games. Still Super. The first two are too dated in design. Fusion and Zero Mission control better but Fusion holds your hand a bit too often and Zero Mission is too easy. Dread and Samus Returns are fantastic. But the music is the worst aspect of them

No, it definitely is. "Just you and Zebes". The correct grammar. The word choice straight out if bland corporate copy. Every poster here should be required to state their distaste for niggers (and/or indians) in order to filter out the AIs, would be way better than a captcha

By the way, prime is the best metroid for white people

I love NEStroid because it never holds your hand. Figure you way around or get fucked. Great chiptune music. Unhindered exploration for the most part, more then any other game in the series. But the respawn mechanic sucks ass and the beams don’t stack

Fusion is horribly linear, the Mac rooms suuuuuuuuck and Adam has been a disaster for the series. But it looks and controls great, and I’d argue that it has the best bosses in the series.

Dread kicks so much fucking ass. Best arsenal in the series, great bosses(but a lot of them are die die die until you figure out the pattern), I enjoyed the emmi encounters a lot. But I don’t like the 360 aiming because diagonals are a lot better. And you can’t get most upgrades until like 80% of the game is over. Even if you get power bombs early, which you can do relatively easily(otherwise I’d be a scrub, right?) you can’t use them for some reason. Loading zones take too long too but ah well

I think hunters was fun. Missed out on multiplayer though :(

Metroid blast was incredibly fun for a minigame

Fusion because it just feels good to play. I love the boss fights. I love the setting and the clear direction on where to go (I can see this being a negative). Or Prime 1 because of it's amazing biomes and backtracking at the end to get those pieces for whatever (I liked revisiting the previous areas).

yeah, objectively I understand people's problems with it, but buying into fusion's horror gimmick I mostly enjoyed the nav sections with adam. each one sets up a little horror scenario, there's a disturbing anomaly, you face it, you go tackle the next one. in practice it's probably overlong but I think it's a cool way to segment a portable horror game.
if I played fusion as 20 year old instead of 12 maybe I'd have a less lenient opinion.

It's just a shame that Fusion is so linear. I was waiting for the world to fully open up with alternate paths between the levels, and it never did. Beyond that, I did like the game, it just fell short of Super.
It feels like the only metroids that can trade blows with Super are fan-made, either romhacks like Subversion or full games like AM2R. Prime is very close in feel at least even though it's a different genre

Prime 2.
I even think Super is the better game when you look at it objectively, I just like Prime 2 for irrational reasons.

At what point is a game more than the thing you sit down to play on your screen?
Are the daydream fantasies I've had about being a bounty hunter on the edge of the galaxy, alone, on a beautiful frightening planet a part of Metroid Prime 2?
Are the ways Prime 2 has inspired me aesthetically and shaped my taste in art and music a part of the game?
I would never have found Coil and the Industrial Music genre if it weren't for Prime 2. I don't even really know if they're related in any real way, but I head a Coil song one day and I was like "Damn, that sounds a lot like Prime 2 - it has all the kinds of hellish futuristic things I like about the more horrific pieces of Prime 2's music"
So am I still playing Prime 2 when I seek out industrial music to listen to for a walk in the rain?

Actually literally just back-porting the better looking Power Beam and charge beam effects from Prime 3 into the game.
