Is it actually good?
I got a few friends I do shit with and we're looking for something to try.
A few of us have played SWAT 4 way back when. Is this a pretty good successor in terms of just wanting more SWAT 4 or is it just hype?
I've looked up a few videos on it and it seems alright but I think I'd trust opinions of people who've played it more

I bought it a few years ago and played like 100 hours right after buying it but haven't touched it since

It's basically SWAT 4 2: Electric Boogaloo, but maybe I'm an old man, but I can't see shit in this game

I have the same issue with Red Orchestra Rising Storm vs Rising Storm 2, on the game with the "good detailed graphics", I just can't notice the characters with all of the level design clutter, same thing with SWAT 4 vs RoN, on SWAT 4 I could just see and tell where all of the targets to potentially shoot at were, and in this game there's several seconds of getting shot at hoping to not die while I figure out where I'm getting shot at from

The fun I have in these games mostly comes from coop, I had more fun on SWAT many years ago than RoN today, but there's plenty of people playing this game that it's easy to get into a fun coop session

My main complaint is "too much visual clutter to know wtf is going on", but maybe that's just a skill issue

Yeah I'd recommend it overall especially if you have like-minded buddies that want to be tacticool with you. Only played it a couple times with friends and when they weren't goofing off and actually focused it was a lot of fun. Mostly play it by myself which may not be for everyone, but I enjoy the gameplay and atmosphere. Enemy ai used to be absolute aim/wall botting dogshit, which is a reputation that still follows this game. But imo it's finally at a point where they're challenging, but not outright cheating and one shotting you through four walls from a different elevation.

I turned off a good portion of the graphic settings. It’s a UE game so it’s hiding behind a lot of post process effects.

Its alot of fun.
Difficulty is completely random though. Some games you can clear through a house easy. Others youll have a crack head shoot you down the block from the 2nd floor.
The a.i. is absolutely as bad as people say.

I'm no pro at the game, but in general the guns put enemies down like they ought to, so much of that is personal preference outside of using handguns/smgs vs rifles on enemies with body armor. You're going to always want at least one person with a mirrorgun so you can snoop before kicking down doors and check for tripwires. If you want to get the highest rank on a mission you need to bring everyone in alive, and the non-lethal weapons can be a bitch to use on some missions. All the gear is unlocked, only cosmetics have to be earned, so you can fuck around with weird builds from minute one.

Is it good?
It's like Swat 4 with the Elite mod installed, crispy graphics, and more firearm porn. In coop it's great if you're into tactics shooters and seeing which of your friends would be the first to turn off body cams.

E-celebs ruined the surprise but some of the levels are unsettling and a lot more true to life than you might think.

As a tactics shooter focused on Swat, it's the only one worth talking about and it is the best in the genre since Swat 4 and Rainbow Six.

As a game it still feels unfinished. The storytelling is all very gamified in the sense that it isn't just buried but it would be like if Dark Souls had no dialogue or characters and the only thing you had was random item descriptions, usually one every couple hours, to tell you what RoN is "about".

I'm fine with that, but if you were expecting your squad to be more than bullet-catchers, it's not really there. It also gets a bit schizo, but considering the List, the sex trafficking ring of cultist sex pests is probably true to life.

The current version has way less of the "crackhead is a SOF PJ in a bit of a rough spot" style of enemy AI that prior versions had. It definitely feels like the newest versions differentiate the enemy groups better.

Even more of a pain in the ass. There are many missions with long range engagements, or situations where you're separated by a window and shit out of luck if the guy with an actual gun shoots first. But S ranking missions is not really a fun way to play, and only rewards you with some extra lore and cosmetics. There's a taser, pepper spray, and a pepper paintball gun, but they are super unreliable, so a beanbag shotgun is your best bet if you really want to do a mission that way. Just don't shoot the beanbag at the head, because it will kill them anyway. Honestly with the content in half of these missions, you'll probably want to slaughter most of them anyway.

It can be a pain since some hostiles will resist several pepper ball shots or flashbangs. You do get two pepperball launchers I think, and beanbag shotguns to use too. Pepperspray and the taser are fun, but not that good to use for crazier missions.

I like it a lot, but sometimes I get dropped almost instantly so my squad mates lose morale and I have to start the mission again. I think the morale needs to be reworked a bit more but that could be a skill issue on my part.

Remember that level with the kids buried in the basement? Very shocking. Devs were also impressed so every single level is that now 'are you spooped yet' nonsense, and the story tries too hard to do some kind of big conspiracy that just adds up to

Based on that premise, the missions are absolutely idiotic, and you'll face opponents you have no business facing. Most random people will open fire on your team with automatic weapons like indoor security, FBI agents, SWATting victims, literal whos, nurses, hotel staff, VIP protection, secret service, druggies. Everyone will engage you violently and with skill of a navy seal.

Even hostages prefer to flee you and do various fake-outs to provoke you into shooting them, up to running off to the hostage takers when they spot you. Victims of a mass shooting will actually do a fake-out animation of drawing a gun, but with a smartphone, just to fuck with you.

Equipment is just M4A1 ten times over, and bringing anything other than armor piercing ammo to take out random gas station robbers is suicide, and they will punch through your plates with their pistols.

General design, visual and audio, is much worse, AI tactical control is clunky, and writing of briefings is disgusting - it omits the crucial details to tell that the boy dindu nuffin before he decided to shoot up the place. Your team is randomly generated nobodies with no personality, that go literally crazy and you need to swap them out every other mission or they quit and kill themselves.

That said, since its a modern game, it has more detail and higher resolution environments, with an entire separate dev being tasked to 'spook up the place' and leave random clutter they call 'environmental storytelling' bits around.

They also nickel and dime you for every 1-2 maps, and throw in another set of M4A1s with every DLC.

It's always gonna be the reaction times and accuracy for me (shout out to the cult of old women who are all inexplicably John Wick). Tell them to put their gun down and they do the no way copper song and dance, and if they decide to draw, in what seems like a fraction of a millisecond they've raised it and put one straight through your eyeball.
I ended up just abusing gas for the whole game to avoid it.

other than the censored shit and the visual downgrade (apparently? didnt play the game after the changes anyway) the game is good. takes a while to get used to ordering your squad to do shit, but after you get the gist of it its pretty neat.

The game went from looking somewhat good to looking like they dropped the resolution to 720p. The lighting and shadows are also completely broken. A bunch of LODs are completely broken so the model stays in its super low detail form no matter how close you get to it.
They claim its all due to a bug, but I'm 100% convinced that this is all just shit they had to do to make it run at an acceptable framerate on consoles. They don't want to add more fuel to the fire by admitting that though, so they are going to just pretend its a bug and hope people forget what the game used to look like by the time the next DLC comes out.

Am a poorfag so I pirated it and played solo thru all mission + DLCs
It was good, very much like SWAT 4 but some features are absent like being able to control snipers or giving orders remotely from bodycam
Overall, a solid game overall tho cant comment much on difficulty since I played on normal with AI teammates

AI however is really bad. Suspects usually running through the wall to escape your line of sight, the pathfinding is really bad they had to make them noclip through walls.

Performance is dogshit even on my 3080

It's serviceable for SWAT alternative at least.

Why haven't you discovered this game sooner??? The censorship is gay, and implies their future projects will be neutered for the subhumans. Aside from that, it's a pretty good game until you've beaten every level too many times, even with buddies. At that point, it's a bit boring, especially when you know all the potential ai spawns.

Doing challenges/achievements give it a bit more oomph, though I have not done commander mode because I think the squad ai likes to get themselves killed in stupid fucking ways.

But hey, if you liked swat 4 and want a change in environment, this should be considered. Just find a mod that reverts the useless changes and not from nexuscuckmods, because this game puts in the atmosphere that these are realistic scenarios... Until they weren't.

It's alright. Most missions feel kind of samey though. It always boils down to "these guys are doing some pedo shit and they somehow have 20 armed dudes guarding the location".

There should've been more missions like the beach house one, the gas station, the meth house, the schizo in the woods and the feminist cult. The hotel one is cool but the rest feels more like military operations. While cool the DLC missions also feel more like something the military would do rather than SWAT.

But the devs are massive faggots and would rather censor their game and take consolefags money while giving the finger to their already existing playerbase.

played for years, off and on

it's good. censorship aside, as per your op, it's in the best place it's ever been as far as i'm concerned. things have been rebalanced to make the game more fun, we have more nonlethal options, lethal is *very* lethal and everything just feels great to use.

gameplay wise, it's stoner cod. me and the guys get fuckin plastered, stoned etc and go shoot crackheads. it's good fun, and since the pacing is so slow, we tend to do alright. plenty of A grades hit off a few edibles.

graphics are... there. nothing wrong. nothing stylistically spectacular either. it's boilerplate realism, and it only has a weird kind of grunge and lighting to distinguish it at all from other games.

levels are well designed, but be prepared for a very stout learning curve for some of them. you'll find 2 or 3 maps that you really enjoy, and the others you'll barely play on because they're so fucking complicated to learn. the maps are skewed toward the large end given the player's movement speed (glacial, bumped to molasses at low ready) so if you miss something it's a slog to backtrack.

mods are good but currently broken because of multiplat release. an absolutely essential mod is for uncapping player count. i forget the name, it's not hard to find, but it removes the 4 player max and lets any number of people go in. 4 men is barely even a fireteam, but when you have 6+ guys all on discord call moving through a map designed for max 4 it gets really fun.

TLDR, buy it if you have friends who want to play it. i've never once queued in matchmaking, never will. i run solo or with friends.

It's tough, but fun. Ironically, it's likely harder with a friend since you lose the AI squad (if they haven't changed it), but working with a friend to clear closets and under beds in a crackhouse is good fun. Also, the guns feel good.

take at least one nonlethal. too many missions have one magical bullshit man you need to keep alive for a good score. you could have a taser, pepperball pistol, rely on handgun+shield for lethal and use beanbag shotgun primary, all are perfectly valid.

USE STINGERS. as many as you can. i usually have no less than 4 throwable, sometimes i end up being grenadier and bring like 10+ stingers and a couple AR mags only. it's stupid fun making every crackhead in a room tip over while the homies subdue them or just blow their heads off.

light armor is meta so you can carry more shit. the line between "i got winged" and "i am dead" is so thin in this game, it's not even worth walking, just go light and accept that shit is lethal so you can take more with you.

riot shield is absolutely goated. your actions are restricted, and eventually you'll be blind because the plexiglas cracks, but it will block pretty much everything and it gives you enough time to land a lethal shot. you can also clutch for your teammates more often than not, many a run has been saved by my dumb ass camping a doorway with a shield.

mk-v is nerfed by recoil, range, and capacity. it's basically meant to make riot shield clearing more viable, which is really cool. if you miss it does nothing, but one round to the chest will drop basically anything unarmored and headshots are a guaranteed kill. at most, in a reasonable loadout, you'll have 28 rounds *total*.

it's not as good as swat 4 and it's too milsim tactical for its own good but it can be good. only get it if you want to play with people. the console patch broke a lot of stuff, introduced a ton of new bugs and did a huge visual downgrade on lighting, models, level geometry and similar assets. they mentioned the censoring but now the visual downgrade before the patch. it's in a worse state than it has been in a long time so i'd wait before getting it

They're not organised neatly but there are clear arcs for the missions, 23 Megabytes still leads to The Spider to Valley of the Dolls to Hide and Seek, and there are hints of interconnectedness in the other missions (Carriers of the Vine's prime suspect was former FBI and was targeting Voll)
But I think the disjointedness adds to the story, struggling to keep track of everything as time passes is part of the greater struggle and chaos that is rotting Los Suenos to its bones, despite the good you can do you're still fighting a losing battle because there's just too much shit going on

It's decent, but not extremely good. The devs were promising a lot during early access and didn't deliver even half of it. Unfortunately, it's probably the best alternative to SWAT 4 available right now.

You complain about grifters but please just pirate the previous version of the game. The new censorship update ruined the graphics, AI (even more so) and the story.

Anyway, RoN at its core is a shockingly good FPS. You can argue for hours and hours about how tactical or how hard a swat sim should be but RoN is just straight up a very intense and very fun experience. Every level has its own vibe and instills different emotions in you as you clear it out and the game just completely locks you into the experience in a way that the old swat games really couldn't, and I really love how although its a swat sim game, it does put you into some cool and very much wanted scenarios like taking on a creepy ass cult town. Also the fact that a tactical swat game actually has good gunplay is a god send.

The problems with RoN start to show up very quickly though, the biggest of them being that the game's ruleset and gameplay context do not change from mission to mission. Regardless if you're just dealing with some dumbass teens robbing a gas station or terrorists who have already killed 200 people, the game always expects you to deal with everything non lethal and it punishes you for trying to be proactive and actually set up and plan your best way of taking out targets.....which is a really big miss step for a tactical game. I would argue that if you wanna get the best experience, using at least the mod that removes ROE for shooting first is an absolute necessity. It makes the game much more fun while making it more tactical as you can actually use your brain to take down a place full of bad guys. I also encourage mods that put more suspects into the mercenary/terrorist maps, it really turns shit up to 11 while not breaking the game in any way.

Ready or Not is some of the most fun I've had with a videogame since 2020, but it has some core issues and modding it is pretty needed. It's too bad the studio and the game's updates are dead.
