How come we can't get stuff like Mass Effect anymore?
Why is every space game nowadays some boring ass No Man Sky shit.

Mass Effect isn't perfect, but at least it makes the player feel like they're actually in some very large galaxy scale sci-fi universe.

Compare this to some shit like Starfield, with a tiny little city that you can literally see the entire expanse of and realize there's nothing beyond it. Yeah, you can't explore the backdrop in Mass Effect, and the actual explorable area is pretty small, but at least it feels like it's part of something larger. That's the one thing mass effect could have done better is having a bit larger and more maze-like area to explore in each city you visit.

Exactly this. Mass Effect tricked your brain into believing there was this huge, breathable world out there, even if you were essentially on rails most of the time. The Normandy, the Citadel, alien cultures being more than just aesthetic-all of that sold the illusion. Starfield, on the other hand, feels like a tech demo someone wrapped a game around. It's all disconnected loading screens and cardboard NPCs. I'd take a small handcrafted zone that feels alive over a thousand lifeless procedurally generated rocks any day.

Because it's all been done before, it's very hard to come up with an interesting original story that also pushes racemixing, transgenderism and feminist ideals. If anyone made black transgender mass effect in 2025 people would shit on it for being a mass effect rip off.

Mass Effect is garbage, one of the worst thought out scifi settings since The Jetsons

Did people really fall for this? I mean, their entire hub formula since the NWN days was
>3 doors, 2 corridors
And if it was supposed to be a really big hub
>5 doors, 3 corridors
Even when they got a bigger budget in DA:I, you go in one of the biggest cities in Thedas, Val Royeaux, and it's just one big square with nothing in it.

The flaw of Starfield is the fact that Bethesda is stuck trying to take the elder scrolls format and translate it to a galactic-scale sci-fi game and it just doesn't work at all. You can kind of forgive the blatantly small scale in Skyrim for example, because I'm just walking around on foot fighting bandits, casting spells, doing quests, all in the same world. I'm not flying a space ship around, it's much easier to immerse yourself in a fantasy world even if the "cities" are just 15 buildings and 30 NPCs.

All he needed to do was make the cities feel actually huge, but limit the player's movements. Yeah, let the player still enter and explore some of the city, but it still has to feel larger than it actually is. The Deus Ex approach for example.

starfield is basically me1 if suits allowed bioware to go full retard with le open world sandbox
devs were never meant to be off the leash, industry needs competent suits now more than ever

I don't think it's going to work in current day.
I can't get excited over 2 corridors and 3 doors with a backdrop. You need to do more, more costs money, and you already inflated the budget of the video game to the point that 3 doors 2 corridors costs $150m US. I don't want GTA Citadel, for example, because there's nothing to do there. In Mass Effect, I don't want to take a space car and drive, especially with Bioware controls, of all things. Even then, if they do make the controls work, do you know how much pre-production time and money will be sunk in it, and how much every other aspect of the game will suffer? And even worse, if they do take the time, but fail and need to change the entire level design philosophy of the game in the last 10 months.
And again, it's fine if you want it, it's fine if you get it, but you're asking this of Bioware of all developers. This is like peak monkey paw shit.
