I already own a real N64 and a CRT. I don't understand this.

Because as hardware ages it begins to process differently. Didn't you hear the big news about how SNES units aren't accurate to within one microhertz of how they used to be 30 years ago and now things like this are better despite using flawed emulation cores?

it probably isn't, but he's real autistic about hardware emulation so i think i believe him if he says it's the best that's been made so far. and ultimately all hardware fails, so i'm not sad to have an option

It's gonna be using the MiSTer core, just like the Chromatic.

How is this different from the Analogue 3D?

Analogue make closed source emulators in-house, ModRetro so far have used open source code from the MiSTer project. The MiSTer core for N64 is extremely mature and basically perfect for 99.9% of games.

I don’t think he means more authentic than the original, most authentic to the original

It's more accurate than N64 hardware now because it's what it looked like when I played it in '96 as a kid. You guys wouldn't ever get it. It's not for you. You missed out.

Knowing them, they’ll also allow it to be moddable and they’ll make rereleases for some games maybe

Hardware emulation isn't more accurate than software, its just preying on severely autistic people using chinese chips that cost 25 cents to manufacture.

If I want authentic I’ll play it on the real N64
If I want upscalers I guess modretro’s m64 isnt it

So where does m64 even fit in? It sounds like it has no real purpose other than HDMI out of the box

New parts and cleaner output plus no need for upscaling is my guess
It’s also for people that have actual carts
It’s very niche
Though I’m very interested in how they do the controllers

yeah, it's definitely the whole idea of not wanting to lose the experience of playing a game on a specific console with all of its quirks. i'm not as autistic as him on this front, but i appreciated the build quality of the GBC one

I fail to see what the difference between hardware and software emulation is. It's not like one is analog and the other is digital, they're both digital.

for something like a handheld it includes the specific way those console displayed images, which gets less standardized as you go further back. for the rest of it, it's basically that physical attributes influence how the digital instructions are processed in ways that are very precise and hard for me to observe or care about, but the purists feel strongly. you're right that it's digital and technically all of those things could ultimately be emulated on the software side, but at a certain point you reach "i am running a simulation of the laws of physics to avoid just building the hardware in a way that matches the original"
