great game, but not survival horror, more of an arcade style beat em up with guns with horror elements, RE5 improved on it mechanically in every way. at the cost of some shit features like forced co-op.

It's a brilliant game. People like to meme that it was a negative influence but it's like putting the cart before the horse. Was the developer that made the shitty RE4 clone going to make a good classic survival horror if RE4 didn't get made? No it would have made a shitty survival horror instead, like all the shitty resident evil 1 clones. The death of the classic survival horror was because it became a lost art, it's an issue of competency and succession, you'll notice it's Capcom that was the first one to make shitty Resi 4 clones.
