Stardew innovated and improved on existing features in the genre years before the actual HM/SoS games could.
It's now called the Stardew genre because every Stardew-like has a hotbar, timed villager requests, home customization, walking over crops without damaging them, etc.

Stardew Valley is cheap and available on multiple platforms, modding support adds tons of replayability and motivates people to add their personal touches to the game.
Meanwhile, Harvest Moon (as a brand/IP) went to shit thanks to Natsume, new Story of Seasons games/remakes just aren't that great (so SoS never got popular as a brand/IP), it took them a fucking decade to release a new Rune Factory game (and it sucked), and they only got PC ports years after Stardew Valley became the new king of the "farming life simulator" genre.

I feel that's genuinely impossible nowadays, the "people would play it" part that is. Because every new SoS that gets announced just makes people go "ugh... ANOTHER stardew clone..."

I didn't understand why I couldn't stand SV until now, but I think you've solved it for me. I can't stand the pixel art in the game, it's literally the only reason I still play Harvest moon/SOS today. It's a type of game that in theory is designed to look pretty, but Stardew Valley doesn't pull it off at all.

Marvelous should unironically get concernedape as a designer for a new SoS remake. I love the HM/SoS settings and characters but they just CANNOT make an actual good game with those.
