the main problem with compass and waypoints is not that they exist, they are a welcome addition in fact, but that logical placement is gone now.
logical placement of enemies and quest targets has gone the way of dodo instead of complementing waypoints and I blame skyrim and oblivion for it

The map being empty would make survival harder. I never really understood frostfall because you were always 10 seconds away from some random cave or house.

Just keep tweaking it to your liking? I don't know what to tell you, buddy. Literal trillions of people figured out a way to enjoy skyrim.

How about making a rule for yourself that you can post for a carriage ride, but only to major cities? Limit pack capacity for each category of item? Only cook at campsites or kitchens?
