I'll give a reasonable take.

Remakes and remasters do not matter as long as the original game still exists and can be purchased or played via a used game.
People that get upset about remakes and remasters are very stupid. Even if you don't like them. Fine, you're entitled to your opinion, but the original game still exists and as long as the dev / publisher hasn't done something anti-video gaming like removing the ability of a person to buy / play the original, there's nothing to be upset about.

In terms of answering OP's question, I actually think Dead Space remake is a better game than the original. There's a few flaws and changes that I disliked, but the game also improved the original in many more ways. The levels and layout are still nearly identical, but the visuals are enhanced to such a degree that it really is just a much better experience playing through it. They also added some new areas that merge well into the game, and add better movement mechanics when in zero gravity.

Yes, people will post .webms of the autistic downgrades, such as the asteroids not breaking up / being destroyed in the same way in that one mining area, or the changes in the various posters on the Ishimura to be "woke" but the game still plays better and feels better to me.

I say that after replaying the original back in 2023 after finishing the remake and the original just didn't age as well as I'd remembered. The lighting wasn't as good as I remembered, the Ishimura is a lot brighter than I remembered in the original, and the levels were very lacking in detail in general and didn't feel "lived in" like they do in the remake.

I agree with the broad strokes of your post, however I want to offer a somewhat esoteric counterpoint.

Even if the original remains accessible, a remake or remaster can dramatically dilute the discourse around a game. Take games like Shadow of the Colossus, SH2, Demonโ€™s Souls or RE4. They used to inspire really good threads, with deep discussions about their design, theorycrafting and often great memes. But once the remake drops it turns into endless sperging. The center of gravity shifts from appreciating the original to shitting on the reinterpretation.

Don't know why but I found the remake made it way too easy - I remember DS1 being a stressful experience on hard where I was actively having to plan my routes through the ship and was almost always on the verge of being out of ammo.
In the remake I played hard as well and didn't have that problem in the slightest - maybe it's because the controls are better and aiming was easier?
Either way it completely changed the experience for me and I didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much.

eh
the only reason I play remastered is because it adds proper hotkey customization
the new graphics are not as good as it should be, it feels kinda like SF2 HD, where they just made the sprites super crispy looking, but didn't improve other things like adding more frames of animations, so these crispy visuals just look kind of at odd with the animations. Also the protoss portraits are a huge downgrade

aoe2 De did the graphical remake a lot better while still feeling faithful. They added things like 2 times more angles/rotations for the units, more frames of animations and also things like building destruction animations

The issue is that there's rarely ever been a remake I was happy was a remake and not a new game instead. That's the actual issue: it's creative stagnation breeding more stagnation, especially because of how video games function relative to other forms of media.

Whether you like it or not as a film, Eggers's Nosferatu needed to be a remake in order to deliver what it wanted to deliver. Did Zero Mission really need to be the original Metroid again, when Super Mission itself was already a de facto remake of the original Metroid? I don't think so. Video games just don't operate that way: what gets inherited in a remake is often the most disposable even in the best of cases. I don't find video game remakes offensive or even always bad, just almost always pointless.

Game would've been perfect if it had been a remake of SH1 instead of 2. The Otherworld aesthetics were way too hellish, but they and the town itself looks fucking amazing. They really should've just made 1 first to polish their craft before tackling 2.

Twin Snakes isn't too bad. The issue is that it doesn't have much to offer over the original game other than polygon count. I think almost everyone agrees that the game looks and sounds worse and while the new enemy behavior is nice and all MGS1 is way too setpiece/boss fight heavy for any of the new enemy design or mechanics from MGS2 to be anything but irrelevant at best and game-breaking at worst.
