It’s not that. It’s the fact that your character moves like a slug, combat is nearly nonexistent, there are no objectives other than “go to the next shelter and survive until the next day”, how am I supposed to have fun in this game? By just walking around like an old lady and jumping like a turtle?

It's for fart-huffing redditors and women who like to pretend that they enjoy video games. Same type of people who thought "Life is Strange" is a good game, and probably the same type of people who consider themselves fans of games they've never played.

I haven't really bought a Steam game since without having pirated it first. Reviews mean nothing when the people are retarded.

I like the physicality of the character's movement plus there are no filters between the player and the game world like menus, interface, the mechanics of interaction are direct and i always appreciate that in any game.
If i push the grab button then i grab anything, i can even grab unto enemies, it's a grab action that fully makes sense.
To describe the lack of barrier between player and game i use the map system as a representative example because everything is like this in rainworld. The game doesn't pause and the slugcat closes its eyes as if to think about where to go next. It's not an inconsequential detail, it's clean minimalism in design.
Then apparently the DLC didn't get it and added an inventory menu.

if you try the dlc you should check all the remix options, because there are some qol changes that you may or may not want, some stuff you should absolutely use like faster shelter opening, some stuff you might want like key items on the map, and some stuff that changes gameplay significantly like pulling spears from walls

the game is hard and it's next to impossible to figure out the controls yourself. It's a 120 pages document on all possible cat tricks but I just know the basics and can cross half of the whole fuckin game in 1 cycle (day). The combat is really good, the 'cat' part of slugcat comes into play here too, because with enough knowledge you are basically unstoppable apex predator with only few counters. Off course you still die in one hit but thats the thrill I love and find hard to find from any other game. Dying just resets the day so you don't miss anything really.
So to summarize why's the game good: the gameplay, the exploration (really nice looking world), the side content like story bits and more 'gamey' dlc campaigns with defined objectives and non realistic abilities. You don't know where to go, but trust me, if you did the game wouldn't be as fun. At least for me something is missing now that I squeezed every juice out of it.

your desire for exploration overrides any complaints your feeble lizard brain can conjure
and then at some point you realize you *get* how the movement works, how the blink-and-you-die combat works, how it feels to live on the fucking edge knowing that a single missed throw will set you hella back but that also you know exactly where and when to fire it off to kill what you need to and then get the fuck out while everything else hostile is still hashing it out above you
you need to inhabit the spirit of the rat
you are not the main character
you are not the big hero
you're a rat in manhattan and you need to learn how to get by before you can learn how to clear rooms

Learning to interact with snails in drainage is where it clicked for me, learning that the game wasn't linear and that it just had a bunch of layers of interactivity peaked my interest beyond the enjoyment of the music and gritty artstyle,
that and learning to swim because it really hammered in the games physics based movement.
There's just so much weight behind everything once you notice it. Shit like throwing your head down off a ledge to fall faster just feels good.
If there's one thing I will always be disappointed by Downpour for it's that they didn't go all in on flooding the maps to swim around with Rivulet. Modded regions somewhat fill that void.

I really enjoyed rain world but when I learned I had to backtrack a few different ways because I went an unorthodox path through the game (unknowingly) I really struggled to keep playing. I slowly started getting better and better but once I got to some of the more difficult areas where you have to dive back into pipes to basically hope salamanders and the vulture things move elsewhere, and I started grappling with the controls such that I found it frustrating (analog sticks should never be used for 2d platformers, kill yourself if you disagree) I just couldn't bring myself to finish. Haven't played it since april of last year.

On RainDB they have mirrors for all the legacy mods and the tutorial section lines installation (just need to double make sure to take note of dependencies)
the file structure for 1.5 vs 1.9 is different so make sure you're using the right one.

Also jolly coop is couch coop, if you want to play over net Rain Meadow on workshop is your friend and doesn't need downpour, there's also split screen coop mod which also doesn't need downpour.

For legacy, if you've ever modded a unity game with BepInEx it's the same as all the others.

You have no choice to say "you just put up with it until you realize the game deserved you putting up with it and indeed was 100x better for making you put up with it" but that process could take 15+ hours of one of the most frustrating survival sidescrollers ever designed
