Has anyone actually met someone like this? Where they genuinely NEVER played a game they claimed to be a fan of?

I seen it all the time last month when I went to Universal Orlando, and a lot of people buying or wearing the Nintendo themed shirts or other things, even though most of them, played maybe one or two Mario games years ago AT MAX.

I am sure that most people who went to the Mario Kart Ride at Epic Universe didn't get all of the references (if any at all), and that very few played Donkey Kong Country Returns (and almost none of them played Yoshi's Adventure). So over there, you will see a ton of "Nintendo fans" whose last console was a Wii only for the pack-in bowling minigame.

At the very minimum, any actual Mario fan should know each and every star in Super Mario 64 (and achieve it without any guide), especially since it's the foundation for modern gaming.

i had a nephew once removed show me his gaming rig.
he was extolling both undertale and deltarune. i asked him about earthbound (which i have a physical copy from 20 years ago and have played it), and he said he was a fan but had never played it himself. kid is like 12.
