The main problem is that the story was too afraid to spoil everything from the first game, despite being a direct sequel. There is even a quiz show at the beginning that asks questions about the first game but in the end it means jack dick.

The real twist is that Tearer was right all along and you prove him right by defeating him. And you can take it a step further to get a better ending, but in doing so you prove that none of it matters because it the simulation can just be robbed of it's consequences
