Because the "shovelware" you're talking about was stuff like Armored Core, which had a cult following way before Souls blew up. FromSoft might not have been prestige tier back then, but they were always doing weird niche stuff that stood out. They didn’t luck out-they iterated. Demon’s Souls was jank, but it had vision. Then they refined it with Dark Souls, and that became the blueprint. Yeah, the fanboys are insufferable sometimes, but you can’t pretend they didn’t change the whole landscape of action RPGs.

Ds2 is good but everything after is pure rollslop. Fromsoft made 3 decent souls games then jumped the shark into shitty 1 dimensional action games. Compared to the 5 great Kingsfield games and 10+Great armored cores their modern output is fucking hogwash.
Fromsoft declined after 2003, and DS3 was when they truly died

They fooled an entire generation of people into thinking mashing on a rolling animation with i-frames was a good core gameplay design. We shoulda been taking the fucked up stuff from souls. Like durability, stat punishment on death, hidden mechanics, a lot of stats per item, area gimmicks that FORCE interaction. But no all we get was rollslop

This is a shit thread but in essence I agree with you. Dark souls is an outstanding adventure game but a mediocre action game. Building your character, exploring new places, managing broken weapons and compensating for punishing new areas with scrounged items and tools great. The combat is serviceable.

“QOL improvements” have robbed the series of what made it actually unique, now souls games are the button layout and the boss cutscenes and nothing else of substance.

Literally kill yourself. King's Field, Armored Core, Otogi, Evergrace, Lost Kingdoms; all great franchises years before Souls. They don't have a single shovelware title in their library. Some are better than others, of course, but they were always innovating.

Why did Kuon specifically get so valuable anyway? It was a $40-60 game in the early 2010s but then exploded about a decade ago and now you're looking at close to a thousand dollars for an NTSC copy and $700-ish for a PAL copy.

It's a cool game but I doubt it's the sort of thing to have gotten some massive critical reappraisal in recent years or anything

Nah, they just cried when they realized you had to actually learn the controls and couldn't just parkour-roll their way through everything while spamming Estus every 5 seconds. Armored Core makes you work for it, just like King's Field. If you think reflex dodge spam is "mechanical depth" then yeah, tank controls probably made your brain blue screen.

go fuck yourself enchanted arms was a great fucking jrpg i loved the grid system they added to the turn based it added a level of depth to the stale gameplay loop, and the different golems you could get with different abilities added a layer of complexity to the game REALLY fucking underrated gemmie you are actual fucking retard.

I played every major fromsoft release from DeS 2009 to AC6 and am now finally playing King's Field IV for the first time.

I have Shadowtower Abyss ready to play on emulator with the fan translation patch, is the first game mandatory? Did it have an english release or at least a fan patch as well?

they made many entries to AC just to rebalance multiplayer. there were fan hosted fromsoft sponsored semi official pvp tournaments for AC in japan and the studio would shit out a new game to change up the pvp.
