you don't have to be particularly smart to be "smart evil", you just have to have some sense of self preservation and worth. The reason why I said "smart evil" is because the alternative is absurdly illogical and stupid. It would be like in a zombie apocalypse you can either kill off the leader of a group of survivors and assume his position and force everyone to do whatever you want vs jumping into a horde of zombies so that your corpse can eat people.
