Playing the switch version right now and its honestly not as bad as I remember it being.
The dungeons have all been pretty good so far (on the fourth one right now) and I actually don't mind the motion controls.
I feel like it mostly just got hate because of Fi (who does suck) and the stigma around wii remote waggling. Still probably one the weaker 3d zeldas but its worth a playthrough.

The last chunk of the game is pretty weak, they really didn't need to send you to all the regions a third time.

Do they fix the fucking Guardian fights? They were by far the worst part of the original game.

Skyward Sword got overhated for UX annoyances and the control scheme but the content is real solid

Played the whole thing handheld to completely avoid the motion controls. For the most part it worked extremely well and I enjoyed it a lot

The game isn't great because it can barely stick the Zelda formula and feels more like it's checking off a list.
Everything is too uniform in terms of just being small-scale puzzle-solving, so it never really hits the balance of navigating a dungeon interspersed with mindless, but engaging combat.
Even when it does manage to stick to it, the mandatory (on Wii) Fi hints spoil the few larger scale puzzles it has (though that's not the only thing that spoils puzzles) and the potential inconsistencies of the Wiimote add stress to the straightforward combat parts.
I think the Switch version might just have the distinct advantage because it makes the Fi hints optional and the controls less shit, but ultimately it's still weak.

I like the backgrounds and the birds, but everything else looks kind of ass.

The recent Zeldas (after Gamecube era) have had terrible control schemes. I don't even have a problem with the fact that there are motion controls in SS, they're just a bad implementation even on the Wii. The biggest shortcoming of the Wii remains the fact that consoles don't let you rebind controls like on PC.

There just isn't a lot of content there and what content there is doesn't mesh very well. The criticism focused a lot on the really bad parts, but that doesn't mean there aren't other shortcomings.
Still solid when compared to most major games though.

The environments look beautiful but I don't like a lot of the character designs.
The villagers in skyloft are so ugly, and not the charming zelda kind of ugly.

The only part of the game where the motion controls have any merit is the sword combat. Even there, it feels more like an elaborate gimmick than a proper medium for skill expression. The stick movement swordplay isn't perfect, but it gets the job done well enough.
All other uses of motion controls in the game are trivial, could be replaced with a button press, or actively make the game worse (swimming, flying).

Motion controls are great for aiming. Its so much smoother and more precise than a stick.
I don't like it for swordplay because every enemy just becomes about swinging your sword in the right direction. It was fun for one game but I'm glad that kind of sword combat didn't become the norm.

Skyward Sword is a fantastic adventure game is own right, and there isn't a developer on this planet who wouldn't cut their arm off to make a game of this quality.

It's just a poor Zelda game though. But even the worst Zelda game is better than 99% of all other video games ever made.

Been replaying a lot of classic 3D zelda lately after not touching them for a decade and it made me realize how good we had it.
botw and totk are fun and all but its just not the same.

The Desert area is the best thing Nintendo has ever done in Zelda.

SS is great overall, but having the main hub disconnected from the rest of the world harms it in my opinion. Having an open hyrule field between all the areas with seamless travel would have been better.

It is kinda cool how the surface world feels a bit like uncharted territory.. but flying through the sky is a bit of a bore that gets old quick. Not even interesting to look at.

Switch version fixed most of the big issues people had with the game.
