Astro Bot is the best PS2-era platformer you can possibly make, and that's not a bad thing. But a Nintendo platformer is different in just how much freedom of movement it gives you via its controls and physics. If you look up a Bananza/Odyssey speedrun right now you'll see DK and Mario flipping and jumping and doing all sorts of crazy shit to slowly shave seconds off their time. For Astro Bot, the most you can really do is hold forward and some level geometry skips. Astro's mechanics are intentionally simple with some challenging casual levels thrown in, while Mario/DK's are incredibly complex, but the casual levels are really easy.

I love how every single streamer was like
