i actually quite like it, the ergonomy is pretty good

the controller equivalent of a fish with legs. this controller is good in a vaccum but both the dpad, shoulders and stick feel like total dogshit and there's way too much empty plastic space between the buttons. also outside of goldeneye none of the actually good n64 games were even designed to take advantage of both the pad/stick and just used one or the other and the stick being an overly specific piece of shit means emulating n64 games leads to some awkwardness unless you sit there fucking with deadzone settings to stimulate the angles this thing would take IRL

I liked it. The Z button was the best thing.
Shame about the stick being made of chinesium, though. Also a shame they patented the Z button so nobody could use it.

Mario 64’s instructions said to put your left hand on the central grip part to use the analog stick and this was absolutely fine for analog stick games. I never even owned a game that required using the left grip and dpad. It wasn’t a great controller but the PSX dual analog and dual shock were worse as analog controllers due to the stick placement that all of your Stockholm syndrome has gotten you used to. Microsoft’s controller design (with the controller S onward) defines what a 3D controller should be but Sony still used the terrible stick placement. I wish one of the chinkheld manufacturers would release a handheld with 6 face buttons, a dpad, and a central analog stick. Make it a GB style tall handheld but give it actual grips. Maybe sorta like this.

I know the idea was that the analogue stick was an experiment but it's still such an absurdly terrible design I've no idea how they thought this was ok.

there's nothing terrible about it. They thought the analog stick would replace the dpad, but didn't want to get rid of it entirely, so put the dpad into the standard position, and move the analog stick down. Then, they though, "hey, what if we made it so you could use the analog stick with either right or left hand, then devs can do whatever they want". Then they made sure to use c-buttons on the right side as a pseudo dpad so devs wouldn't be pigeonholed into using one prong for any one thing. If they had kept start and select and put it in the same positions as a and b on the left, then nobody would be questioning it, imo.
