They were novel at the time
Novelty was most of the appeal.

Yes. They were mindless fun and a neat simulation of the DBZ fighting style.
>Various forms from each arc
>Plenty of nods with certain characters (all tailed saiyans get to transform under a full moon, androids can't charge KI, characters with scouters can't lock-on to you if they lose it,etc)
>Main characters alongside the supporting cast alongside the villains of each respective arc atop the movie villains and even anime-exclusive characters alongside oddballs like the Saibamen, Hirudegarn and Nam
>Potara skills let you buff a character or balance a character out
It was a virtual action figure game and that's all it needed to be.
And yes Sparking Zero missed the point
