Please tell me the dialogue gets better at some point. At the moment, I've just met Esquie, and despite all the praise on writing and story, I can't help but to cringe constantly at the dialogue. Mediocre overall writing aside, does the dialogue get better at any point?

To each of their own, but to me the writing of the character's and especially their interaction is just utterly cliche, unrealistic and bland. Comparison to Marvel-style, snarky, constantly self-aware and completely lifeless, 'safe' dialogue isn't far fetched. Each 'emotional' moment is forced in with overtly laid out elements without any subtlety, and every normal moment includes some 'witty' quip, le funny moment between the old man and the wunderkid, and the cardboard characters barely contribute any to the situation they are in.There's plenty good to this game, but dialogue and subsequent characterization is just horrible.

The scenes are well written because characters always evolve in some when the scene concludes. There is always a source of tension between 2 characters, like you see in Theater scenes. The director used to do Theater acting in school and i can see why.
Scenes like this are the total opposite of your usual slop writing. Where most of the scenes only are here to dump exposition and lore to the player. I played Dragon Age recently and 99% of the scenes are useless, it's depressing.
I do agree some lines can sound cringe though but it's more a voice acting issue. The dialogues are good. Simple, concise and not wordy. Exactly how vidya dialogues should be.

E33 story is very narrative driven, there are only a handful of characters that actually impact the plot, so they can have Gustave, Lune, Sciel, Monocco, and even Esquire be as melodramatic and emotional as they want because while what they say may give more characterization, it doesn't actually provide any more context to what is happening, what they say never really matters beyond a handful of times. And when Renoir and Verso show up, the ones that are at the forefront of the major thematic conflicts, their dialogue is all vague and won't make sense until later. Other games dialogue do get very exposition dumpy but most other games have characters who's actions and thoughts give real insight and information as to the major themes and messaging of the game so the writers need to get certain things across even if it isn't always done perfectly. The dialogue in E33 is very pretty and flowery though, which i am sure a lot of people appreciate

When most people praise the writing really they only praise the act 2 ending and act 3.
Personally i think the writing just okay for most of the game, and very good in act 3 (which is only like 2 hours long)

Act three is great solely because of Renoir, who actually gets shit done instead of just moping around all day
