It's a great technology, not a meme at all
For example 60fps content actually doesn't even display correctly on anything but multiples of 60 (120Hz, 180Hz, 240Hz...)
But with variable refresh rate it does

The only downside is VRR flicker depending on the monitor (VA and OLED)
